Will everyone follow Trump? Some undoubtedly; headlines will continue about 5 day demands. Many will push harder on 3-4 days. Other CEOs see flexibility as a talent advantage, or get that battling employees blows engagement and trust. If you can't redesign for flex, how's genAI going to work?

Office utilization (butts in seats) is 50% of pre-pandemic. That hasn't changed much the last two years. The week of Jan 15th, which should have been up massively given headlines? 49% "Pre-pandemic" average at most companies was ~50% seat utilization. So reality? 25% of seats occupied today. /3

Work from home is up 5X from pre-pandemic levels, according to @nickbloom.bsky.social and team's tracking. The trendline has been very modestly down the last year, but largely "flat as a pancake" as Nick puts it. /2

This is great, and it’s also true of ANY good operating model — remote or not! “If you’re serious about implementing remote work, you can’t just go grab an operating model off the shelf; you’ll be better served by building your own.” The alternative is random chance across cubicles.

This one’s a blast: “Instead of equity and inclusion programs, we will build programs that focus on how to apply fair and consistent practices that mitigate bias for all, no matter your background." In other words, they’ll ensure equitable treatment and be inclusive of people from all backgrounds?

Example: no longer "require managers to source candidates from underrepresented backgrounds” and “never making hiring decisions based on protected characteristics (race, gender, etc.).” Playing to the anti-DEI crowd. Anyone who’s done corporate training knows it’s not legal to hire on that basis.

Yep. Having managed teams who worked in multiple cities for a couple decades pre-pandemic, I knew the office wasn't the MOST important factor. But I didn't get until I had to lead people without everyday-in-an-office as the default that it was the LEAST important factor.
