Hatoful Boyfriend and Doki Doki Literature Club succeeded because they RESPECTED their own genre. Because their devs LOVE visual novels. They weren't trying to be ironic or make fun of the genre or, worse, make fun of people for liking it.

Why would you make a game in a genre you clearly have no respect for? Why do so many western devs think of VNs as something to be derided and mocked? You can't "deconstruct" a genre you have no love or passion for. You're just mocking the genre and its fans.
