This is hardly the first time Paul Weiss has lent a hand to the erosion of civil liberties. Take the wild suit it filed in Texas, claiming that those who brought lawsuits against Exxon for climate misinformation were violating Exxon's free speech rights www.theguardian.com/environment/...

In other words... Paul Weiss had no small part in propping up corporate oligarchy. That doesn't make their actions any less shocking or "obscene," as @lsca.bsky.social put it

reporting by @dharna.bsky.social found one of those groups appeared to have had Chevron, a defendant in Honolulu’s case, as a client. you can see why this rule would be a problem for them www.theguardian.com/us-news/arti...

The first-of-its-kind research says news outlets can reduce, but not eliminate the influence of fossil fuel sponsored ads on readers. “Outlets should not be disguising paid content as a news article, full stop" @commscholar.bsky.social

Greenpeace asked for the trial to be live-streamed, but that motion was denied. You can follow @trialmonitors.bsky.social -- a group of attorneys monitoring the trial in North Dakota -- for more updates.

During the protests at Standing Rock, Energy Transfer worked with police and a private security firm to surveil & spread disinformation about Indigenous water protectors. theintercept.com/2023/05/22/s...

The case could have massive implications for protest & free speech. The firm representing Energy Transfer has a history of helping corporations silence their opponents -- and is also helping Big Oil use the 1st amendment to defend itself from climate lawsuits. www.exxonknews.org/p/the-law-fi...

Energy Transfer says GP led the Indigenous resistance to DAPL at Standing Rock. Critics say it's an erasure of Indigenous movements & part of a bigger strategy by the fossil fuel industry to silence its opponents -- including advocates, communities, & journalists. www.desmog.com/2022/10/07/s...
