Shing really said it. I love showing people around the house, pointing out art by alum retreaters, projects we helped Lauren complete, or relaying lore around certain items in the house. The lineage feels alive, and now we're a part of it. It makes the house feel like it's haunted by loving spirits.

Artists who have come to Wayward in the past often say it better than we could:

I quit Substack. My newsletter is now here, please read it and subscribe. THANKS. www.leahreich.com/technology-i...

I cannot believe they cancelled Kaos? The whole show was so well done?

My Blood Glitters Like Rubies in the Thrumming Dark, 2025

Ok here is the thing with action/praxis/protest/showing up: Sometimes you contribute by being a megaphone. Sometimes by being a wallet. Sometimes by being a physical body. Sometimes by being fuel or being relief. If you can’t be one thing at any given moment you can almost certainly be another.

Old portrait from Rituals a 2021 October zine.

One of the first, soft targets of fascist regimes is "degeneracy," including "degenerate art." It's often first in line. And after destroying that's been ushered into acceptability? They just start expanding the definition of degeneracy.

A self portrait.

It’s a new year and Wayward is almost ready to begin admissions for our next creative retreat! The 2025 session will run September 28 to October 5, and applications will open February 15. More updates soon, but in the meantime many questions can be answered on our website at Waywardretreats.com

I am a former incarcerated firefighter. I served in a California fire camp from 2009 to 2012. Misinformation is afire on the internet, so here are facts about the prison firefighter program, all in one place. A thread.

If you see this, post yer ghosts

It’s been a minute since I’ve been on! Happy New Year!

new year new blep

In a Lucid Moment, I See My Wounds so Clearly, 2024 gaaaaah I loved arcane so, so much I can't stand it.

Dryad's Tears (second personal piece this year! started back in March and just so managed to finish in 2024 🌟)

Sometimes I think that photoshop's selection tools are just fucking with me.

Favorite piece from 2024. I didn't get a ton of painting done this year, and while I think it was a needed break, I am so excited to get to work on the hoarde of a ideas that I have for next year. Reverie, 2024

What are we DOING here? We're just meant to sit and act like this insane plagiarism and climate threat that requires more money than anything has ever cost is worth it? Are we meant to pretend that ChatGPT is worth this aimless, meaningless destruction of capital and our environment? For what?

fossil-record patisserie (2020)

My favourite artworks from this year 🖤

Stargaze - watercolour and acryla gouache on paper One of my favourite paintings from this year - painted for Magic: The Gathering's Bloomburrow.

Had the real pleasure to draw the book cover artwork for SILK & SINEW 🌱🖤 Pre-order this gorgeously haunting anthology now!

We were able to catch a morning matinee of Nosferatu for Christmas, and holy cow what a gorgeous nightmare of a film. I just loved it.

Max fought very hard for life for the last two months and unfortunately lost this morning. Our community is less vibrant with him gone. Amelia now faces the financial burdon of that loss, and we know that our systems in this country are not kind to grief. www.gofundme.com/f/funeral-co...

Newsletter: Our digital lives are unregulated growth-hacked ecological disasters. The modern tech ecosystem's growth-at-all-costs mindset is actively harming billions of people, pushing them toward authoritarianism for profit. We must fight back. www.wheresyoured.at/never-forgive-them/

With all the shows I've done this year, I've spent over $10k in tabling fees alone. This does not include travel or hotel costs.

Seriously. I don’t think readers—and especially other writers—realize how effective we are at selling *other* people’s cool projects just by talking about how much we love them. Signal boost the things you love!

This response from @sbearbergman.bsky.social to @hildur.bsky.social’s post has changed my week— it is so wholesome, and human, and so the energy we all need right now. And Kerstin Langenberger, the naturalist who posted “I am on my way with the necessary equipment”? This woman is the hero we need.

I was able to eat soup and watch @shing.bsky.social give a presentation on these beavers recently, which in itself was delightful, and now this folk musical and puppet documentary really turns the charm up to 11.

This curious being, Hieronymus' Grandmama, as I think of her, is inspired by a long love of Bosch and his marvelous strange worlds. She's on eBay right now, ending Tues. Dec. 10. If you'd like to look, her item number is 116412332499, and let's see -- can I add a link? tinyurl.com/BoschFragment

Reverie, 2024 Even after annihilation we can choose better, more beautiful, and more loving ways to occupy ourselves and our lives. Monday, 12/9 is the last day to get your order into my shop before I close it down for the holidays. Thank you to everyone who has ordered already! emeraldbarkley.com
