I keep feeling echoes in my body between what we are seeing now and what I have experienced as a little girl under authoritarianism. This article is of little lessons of survival I’m carrying and I wanted to share them with you . https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/survive-trump-s-authoritarianism

“Scholarship cannot flourish in an atmosphere of suspicion and distrust. Teachers and students must always remain free to inquire, to study and to evaluate, to gain new maturity and understanding; otherwise our civilization will stagnate and die.” Justice Earl Warren

NEW: Entire scientific fields have been wiped out by the nearly 800 grants cancelled at NIH, finds a @nature.com analysis of the unprecedented cuts. About half of all 2024 NIH projects related to LGBT+ health or vaccine hesitancy — gone. See the other topics and US states hardest hit here:

This 👏🏼is 👏🏼how 👏🏼you👏🏼do👏🏼it!

Something to reflect on before tax day

A few thoughts about today's protests: 1) The April 5 Hands Off day of action clearly ranks as one of the very largest mobilizations in U.S. history, by two different measures: -- total national turnout (~ 3 million) -- number of local protests (~ 1400)

people being in the streets means something. never let your cynicism convince you otherwise.

“If the main pillar of the system is living a lie, then it is not surprising that the fundamental threat to it is living the truth. This is why it must be suppressed more severely than anything else.” Václav Havel 🔥should we do a global book club?

Thank you to all who marched and allowed each voice to be united against fascism, against targeting students, against the dismantling of democracy. Proud to have walk alongside of millions of my beloved community around the country.

“while life, in its essence, moves towards plurality, diversity, independent self-constitution and self-organization, in short, towards the fulfilment of its own freedom, the post-totalitarian system demands conformity, uniformity, and discipline.” Václav Havel, The Power of the Powerless

Yes, we are going through events that we have gone through before. While shocking it also means we can respond resolutely and rise up together faster. Do not let your community be ripped apart. Do not turn on neighbors. See you at the marches today!

See you all soon!

https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/community-action-over-courts We are mobilizing. And it is making a difference. These grassroots efforts are necessary on our journey toward justice. See you in the streets! Thank you @commondreams.org.web.brid.gy for creating space for this conversation.

The people have spoken! Let’s keep doing this!

Someone trying something. We need more of this. This matters. The protests matter. The continued speaking out despite the risks matter.

“individual acts of self-preservation have a collective cost: when prominent civil society actors silence themselves or retreat to the sidelines, society’s capacity to fight back is diminished, weakening our democratic defenses.” www.thecrimson.com/article/2025...

NYU canceled a planned speech by the former president of Doctors Without Borders because she planned to discuss the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and cuts to US AID. This is what actual campus censorship looks like.

On a run today. I spotted her through the buildings in a Red Hook. I worry for her, for all of us.

It’s hard to take in this relentless assault on our work-in-progress democracy- but do what you need to take care of yourself but do not do not disengage.

London planes. I’ve always felt a special affinity for them.

Spring has sprung in NYC.

Elon Musk is flooding a Wisconsin Supreme Court election with millions of dollars. “The level of corruption at play here, the level of money at play here, really is a warning sign for what's happening to our democracy," says @ariberman.bsky.social of @motherjones.com.

Unidentified men grabbing someone off the street and putting her in a car because she wrote an op-Ed. This as flatly authoritarian as anything we’ve seen in this country in a very long time.

The biggest divide in America today is not between “right” and “left,” or between Republicans and Democrats.  It’s between democracy and oligarchy.  The old labels — “right” and “left” — prevent most people from noticing they’re being shafted.  Know the truth.

Scoop: The Washington Post recently—and quietly—removed its "Democracy Dies in Darkness" slogan from the opening sequence of its app, a notable change given Jeff Bezos once insisted it always appear alongside the logo. It also no longer appears atop its mobile site. www.status.news/p/washington...

The Trump admin. has detained and revoked the visa of Tufts graduate student Rumeysa Ozturk. Last year, she coauthored a piece arguing for “the equal dignity and humanity of all people,” including Palestinians. www.tuftsdaily.com/article/2024...

Left unchecked, anyone who opposes Trump — whether on Israel or on cuts to Medicaid and Social Security — could become a target. Mahmoud Khalil must be freed immediately if our cherished freedoms of speech and assembly are to have any meaning.

“With the rapidly escalating situation, the criminalization of free speech, and eminent travel bans, what has happened to me can happen to you.” www.normanfinkelstein.com/letter-from-...

“By eliminating the only federal agency dedicated to funding library services, the Trump administration’s executive order is cutting off at the knees the most beloved and trusted of American institutions and the staff and services they offer...” www.nytimes.com/2025/03/24/a...

If there were an agency dedicated to finding corruption, fraud and waste in the federal government, it would start right here.

“the administration’s “efforts to punish and suppress speech it disagrees with smack of McCarthyism.”” www.nytimes.com/2025/03/24/n...

It's simply untrue that, compared to 2017 mass resistance, we are seeing mass quiescence. February '25 saw 2x as many protests as Feb '17. This data doesn't include Bernie 'fighting oligarchy' huge rallies, or the disruptions at GOP & Dem town halls. But there are differences 1/3

Speaking truth to power. (False power.)

“The current times are dark. The issues are clear. Our choice now, as we leave behind the confidence men and their false hopes, is either to wake up and give everything to "achieve our country" or to remain asleep as America burns.” - Eddie S. Glaude Jr.

Amazing offering!

Under pressure from Elon Musk, Delaware lawmakers are about to pass a law that would erode small investor protections and hand Musk the largest CEO payout in history. The richest man on the planet keeps bending government to his whim to make himself even richer.

Shameful
