this encapsulates what all of this administration is about. they aren’t “accidentally” destroying departments. they are intentionally destroying the government so they can become the government. the only issue they have with the system is they don’t profit from it or control it

After a few years off, I’m running for co-chair of Portland DSA again in the upcoming leadership election. And I’ve got an agenda - inspired by Zohran Mamdani’s Family Agenda for NYC, Portland DSA is going to fight for a Family Agenda for Portland

Tragic incident today: the pot and kettle have exploded.

the cops, of course, exonerate themselves after killing Tyler even though “(They) find no evidence in this investigation to support the notion that Tyler Holloway would have knowingly fired a gun at law enforcement officers that he called to the scene for assistance” yachatsnews.com/district-att...

Public records obtained by Street Roots show Portland Metro Chamber’s influence over a city administrator’s work on Zenith Energy, providing political cover for the controversial land use approval earlier this month.

Portland! Next Monday please help launch Omar El Akkad's searing new book at @powells.bsky.social.

This piece by Susan Freinkel does a great job describing our nightmarishly complex bureaucratic patchwork of housing and social services, and telling the stories both of the people who suffer within it and the people who try to help them navigate it. sfstandard.com/2025/02/08/g...

Yes! If I gained anything besides burnout from the approximately 5 million organizing meetings I facilitated during Trump 1, it was the realization that effective activism is a conversation, not a lecture.

"With communism as the horizon, we move beyond surviving to thriving, beyond basic needs, to needs for the time and space for creativity, conviviality, exploration, and joy. Universal basic services provide the infrastructure for emancipated egalitarian forms of life."

The Zenith resolution was just posted on @councilorgreen.bsky.social city website. Co-sponsored by @councilormorillo.bsky.social, @councilordunphy.bsky.social, and @councilortiffany.bsky.social. It's very good and brings community concerns into the spotlight. I recommend reading it in full 👇

Thank you to my peers in the BDS movement for identifying Chevron as a sponsor of the PDX City Club event series. I asked them to drop sponsorship and they’ve agreed. Solidarity includes actions of all sizes. Special thanks to Councilor Koyama Lane for leading on this.

i get the impulse to list the impacts of all these stupid policies like groceries will be pricey and construction will slow but I really think we need to argue from first principles here. we shouldn't be fucking hardening borders come on

here's one of the fighters we need:

Just in case: If you are in the Seattle-area and need a document notarized to protect yourself and your family from this fascist regime but are too afraid/lack the funds to go to a UPS store or similar, I am a notary and I will notarize your documents *for free*.

"Tiffany won. She became the first Asian American woman ever elected to Portland’s city government. A mom and third-grade teacher and rank-and-file union member and friend and neighbor had won a seat in this new form of government." Lydia Kiesling on doing politics: www.thecut.com/article/how-...

Illuminating perspective from a first time campaign mngr navigating a new system/space during last year's Portland council race:

I've built a machine that can be Confidently Wrong. It can also make pictures that all look a bit the same, as well as make a video of you kissing any celebrity or person you know. In payment, I'd like to boil the world's oceans dry, & steal all literature. For some reason, my head is not on a spike

In which my friend Lydia writes beautifully about managing my friend Tiffany’s campaign, winning, and reminding us that refusing to cede power is hard but necessary.

“Depending on the day, it was either destabilizing or freeing to realize that many political campaigns are made up of people who don’t know what they are doing, and that some of the people who act like they can tell the future have no idea.” www.thecut.com/article/how-...

It's early days but Portland's new city council is, at least, a change from the walking, talking, business lobby rubber stamps we've had in those seats in the past. @lydiakiesling.bsky.social is such a great writer and also, it turns out, a great campaign manager. www.thecut.com/article/how-...

"We must grapple with the reality that the current models we have for philanthropy are not up to the task of incubating, developing and supporting strategy on the left." on the list of serious election post-mortems, highly worth your time to read www.thenation.com/article/soci...

I wrote about my brief unlikely local politics interlude for @thecut.com. Written with love for Portland & loathing for the genocidal clowns who made national politics so alienating. If you have an amazing friend maybe you can accidentally be her campaign manager too. www.thecut.com/article/how-...

Glad to see *some* critical engagement with the Tiebout model in that task force report, which sort of hangs out in the room with a collection of observational data and is standing ready to serve as an appeal authority when convenient rather than do any causal work www.wweek.com/news/2025/01...
