Yep. Stop using 'medieval' as a foil to make yourself feel better about the present day.

It's the final week of our #MedievalWomen exhibition and we've been working on restoring our Medieval and Renaissance Women digitisation project online. The first manuscripts are now available! blogs.bl.uk/digitisedman...

This is digital humanities

The Royal Society’s current ‘leadership’ might recall that their ‘we must be above mere politics’ wankery sounds awfully like the bleating by opponents of reform in the 1840s. The Society in its present form exists because their predecessors decided fuck that and got right down and political.

Hello Bluesky! We are the Society for Medieval Feminist Scholarship, which promotes the study of the patristic age, the Middle Ages, and the early modern era from the perspective of gender studies, women's studies, and feminist studies.

I seldomly see No. 2 in academia (although I've seen plenty outside of it). But I've seen my share of No. 1, esp. among #historygames students who are not supervised by experienced game scholars (which is sadly not that rare). The fact that a lot of us get into the field... 1/3

Medievalism/games your thing? Do we have the event for you!

If you work in the creative industries, please give feedback on this government public consultation on AI and our copyright. ALCS provides help here with answering the questions, and you don’t have to answer every question to submit it. The consultation ends SOON, Feb 25th:

Comics/visual literacy helps students to truly see what is happening in prose, political cartoons, etc. and to slow down and really go in depth. So very proud of my students - often showing me new ways to view resources as well.

I've spent this week actively trying to drag my focus from global doomscrolling to what I can do here in the UK. I'm going to share some of the practical things I've done so far, in case it helps anyone else feel encouraged to look for stuff to do in areas they feel strongly about.🧵

Valentyne ❤️ prints in my shop!

Even though I’m a medievalist I spend a lot of time reading stuff in the history of tech and new media theory—scholarship that is essential to what I research. I am BEGGING those scholars to develop some critical awareness regarding the supposedly bookless and illiterate pre-print period in Europe.

This week! Come hear me chat about d'Eon's many interactions with the English Law Courts this Friday 14 February.

It’s always nice to give women their actual names too. So many identities have been subsumed in the titles of mother, wife, daughter, grandmother and sister. It’s a nightmare for those of us trying to restore these women to the record. They had identities as individuals.

Francisca was an important figure in Amsterdam's Black Community in the 1630s (see #day5). Tonight her story will be on National Television in the history series 'Het Verhaal van Nederland: Amsterdam" #blackhistorymonth #amsterdam750 npo.nl/start/serie/... bsky.app/profile/voet...

News that wiki editors are facing threats from Musk and the Heritage Foundation because of “bias” should be raising alarm bells for platforms that rely on user moderation (basically all of them, but Reddit esp. since its mods have come under fire recently).

BBC just released damning research on AI assistants' news accuracy. Results: 51% of AI responses had significant issues. 19% introduced errors when citing BBC. 13% misquoted or made up BBC content entirely. 🤐🤐 www.bbc.co.uk/aboutthebbc/... via @ezraeeman.bsky.social

Very excited to be speaking at the @ihr.bsky.social Late Medieval seminar later this week (Friday 14th), presenting some of the findings of my PhD thesis! Link to sign up here (online or in-person): www.history.ac.uk/events/loyal...

Exciting news from the Isle of Man. Iron Age spoons are incredibly rare; this is only the 28th example that we know of & implies trading of these special ritual tools west from Britain. Congratulations to the finder, landowner and Manx National Heritage 👏 manxnationalheritage.im/news/iron-ag...

🚨I'm thrilled to share that @wadhamoxford, in collaboration with @OxfordHistory Faculty, has established the Koch History Centre, an Institute of Advanced Studies for History. The Centre will support 12 junior and senior fellows. This year's theme: "Religion and the State." Please consider applying!

Campop blog #34: In 1500 about 50% of England and Wales was common land, but as Leigh Shaw-Taylor explains in today's blog, this does not mean that everyone could access it, and most agricultural labourers could not. @camunicampop.bsky.social www.campop.geog.cam.ac.uk/blog/2025/02...

"I need not mention that the slave who ran away from his master’s command ought not to have sought out the church of Vienne and stirred up trouble for me. He was at Lyons; he could have stayed inside the church there." ~Avitus of Vienne, Letter 44, complaining to Gundobad about a fugitive slave

Bob (R.I.) Moore, Professor @newcastleuni.bsky.social for many years, died this morning. He leaves behind an impressive body of academic work, including his masterpiece “The First European Revolution, c. 970-1215”. He was also a pioneer of comparative world history. We will sorely miss him.

Men’s monopoly on global health leadership is at odds with the scientific evidence, writes @jocalynclark.bsky.social. And with the current backlash against rights and equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts, it’s even more important to advocate for gender equality www.bmj.com/content/388/...

Trim Castle • Meath Built in the 12th century by the powerful Anglo-Norman lord Hugh De Lacy, Trim Castle is one of the most impressive medieval castles in Ireland. And as today is the first Wednesday of the month, it is free to visit! #IrishBlueSky #SpéirGhorm

A powerful and incisive defence of science, research, human rights, and our profession of medical journal editors from @bmj.com leadership. 🔥 And a great example of how health & medical institutions must take a stand against authoritarianism.

If you're working on Yorkshire's past (medieval or otherwise), please do consider submitting a paper for this year's @roysociety.bsky.social conference, held in the Concert Hall at Scarborough library on Friday 6th June. If you've got any questions, we're very happy to answer them!

A great resource :) “Epistolæ: Medieval Women's Letters… a collection of medieval Latin letters to and from women. The letters collected here date from the 4th to the 13th centuries, and they are presented in their original Latin as well as in English translation...” (epistolae.ctl.columbia.edu)

Want to do a fully funded PhD on medieval English historiography? Well do I have an opportunity for you! See the attached ad and get in touch ASAP if you're interested (and please share widely).

You read that correctly. Puts the Norman realm into some sort of perspective, doesn’t it?

History & the Humanities Research Training for Feb - March 2025. Our 4th online session on the 4 March will focus on Podcasting for Historians with @clairelanghamer.bsky.social, @deannalyncook.bsky.social, @rozierhistorian.bsky.social, Samuel Hume and Izzy Conn. www.history.ac.uk/events/podca...

Thanks to @tkinias.bsky.social's reminder of Measuring Worth site, where you can adjust relative to labourers' wages, rather than to prices (another way to answer at 'what would this be ring worth today?'). Relative to wages, £3 in 1550 is roughly £17,000 today 🤯 www.measuringworth.com/index.php

'Staff at English Heritage have been shocked to discover that the cash-strapped organisation is planning up to 200 redundancies and the winter closure of various...historic sites in its care. At least 7% of the workforce could be affected, with curators being particularly targeted, it is believed.'

This is also what annoys me about companies selling off articles and books to train AI. I can’t get access to that as a scholar without major fees paid by me or my library system. Why does AI get it?
