Some in Labour HQ may want to reflect on this - here’s a policy which has drastically improved air quality, benefitting the poorest citizens. But Starmer’s LOTO started criticising it because a couple of Clarkson bigmouths complained in focus groups & they (wrongly imho) blamed it for Uxbridge loss

Even now I'm half wondering if this is some softening-up exercise for a more limited (but still dreadful) set of final proposals, but just to be clear - this would be an act of outright barbarity without precedent: not copying the Tories, worse than the Tories. www.itv.com/news/2025-03...

If you’re drawn to a politician because they promise to be cruel to Muslims or Jews or immigrants or gays or transgender people etc, the least you should do - the absolute, bare bones, still morally vacuous least - is ask yourself whether they’re likely to stop at the group you want to see targeted.

The UK's record on child poverty is pretty terrible. Based on before-housing-cost thresholds, only Greece had worse rates among European countries in 2018.

According to the Buckland report, only 30% of autistic adults are in work. Govt should probably work on improving this before cutting social security. #TeamSEND #Autism #CutsHaveConsequences

I've been thinking a lot about that bumper sticker which says "everything looks like a conspiracy theory when you don't understand how anything works" and folks it's pretty obvious to me that the people in power right now have absolutely no desire to understand how anything works.

Athletics & #Crufts on in the same day 😁

Not sure you can call this anything other than retaliatory vindict & spite, can you? Collective punishment?

There is ample room for improvement on into-work rates from incapacity benefits - less than 1% of people in receipt of UC LCWRA element move into work each month. Off-flow rates have halved over the past decade – just returning to 2012 levels would save £0.6bn per year.

The UK is among the worst nations in Europe for child poverty. In the UK, 11% of 15-year-olds reported they had skipped a meal in 2022 because there wasn't enough money to buy food. In the Netherlands and Finland, this number was 3%.

The majority of parents in poverty who remain out-of-work face significant barriers to work. This includes having a child under 5, having a disabled adult or child in the family or having three or more children.

Today's Climate Change Committee report shows there will be long-term benefits for households from Britain's decarbonisation drive. But, the Government should protect poorer households from disproportionately large upfront costs says @zackleather.bsky.social

The Benefit Cap has only ever had one increase in line with inflation since being introduced. @mikebrewerecon.bsky.social explains how this freeze in nominal terms is contributing to child poverty, with the cap becoming tighter in real terms as the cost of living increases.

The CCC suggests that benefits from the move to net zero in aggregate will outweigh the costs. Its estimates suggest that, from 2026, net zero should show up as a net positive on average household expenses. Read our response to the CCC report now➡️ https://buff.ly/43eo75b

Scrapping the two-child limit and benefit cap should be a priority in tackling child poverty. This could lift 500,000 children out of poverty, and is by far the most effectively targeted route. Read more➡️https://buff.ly/4biQa5z

What a wombat.

The Climate Change Committee has released its Seventh Carbon Budget, highlighting the urgent need for an 87% reduction in emissions by 2040 to stay on track for Net Zero by 2050. Read our response in the image below and on our website. theriverstrust.org/press-releas...

🧡 Unpaid carers deserve more. Here's why we are fighting for change. 1) Who are #UnpaidCarers? An unpaid carer is someone who supports someone else - whether it's family or a friend - due to illness, disability or addiction. But we do this without recognition, financial support, or breaks.

If you get the first bill for electricity or gas that was used more than 12 months before you do not have to pay it. Demand your supplier cancels the bill. ignore threats, and remind them backbilling is banned under licence Condition 21BA. If refused go to www.energyombudsman.org

Hedgerows - we know wildlife depend upon them for habitat, owls for flight routes, & mammals, birds & insects for safety & food. Now researchers have discovered hedges increase soil carbon storage by almost half compared to intensively managed grassland. So why are they not better managed? See🧵

I have a vague plan that we should have a kind of scouts/guides for grown ups where you can get free training in these kind of necessary skills. Maybe some kind of tie-in with voluntary orgs like RNLI, Mountain Rescue, Special Constables, Volunteer Firefighters etc.

It's been a long time since Private Eye's satire has made me audibly wince, but this is so to the point if it were a knife people would demand it be banned.
