DOGE has reached Antarctica. Science will suffer—but so will global power dynamics. www.wired.com/story/doge-a...

Rubio terminated 5800 USAID contracts – more than 90% of its foreign aid programs – in defiance of the courts. Here’s a list of just some of the lifesaving awards that were terminated. Nearly all were Congressionally mandated. They’ve saved millions of lives. 🧵

We just had the first cancellation from a US scientist who can no longer participate in our workshop on "Fjords in a changing climate" because the title includes the forbidden c** word. Insane, unbelievable, but most of all very, very sad.

The mass firing of both new hires and recently promoted senior staff within #NOAA, including mission-critical and life-saving roles at the National Weather Service (#NWS), is profoundly alarming. 1/11

Heartbroken for all those who lost their jobs at @noaa.gov yesterday - and all those across the US and beyond who will suffer without the essential services they provided. 🌊💔

I’m a federal employee, a research meteorologist at a NOAA lab (OAR-NSSL). I still have my job tonight. Many of my NOAA colleagues and many more of my fellow civil servants don’t. I want to share what people like me do. Instead of doomscrolling, maybe we can learn what civil service looks like.

🎉Congratulations 🎉 to Prof Kate Hendry @krhendry.bsky.social who has been awarded The Geological Society's Bigsby Medal for eminent services to geology. We already knew she was a top tier scientist, but now it's official!

We have published our advice on the Seventh Carbon Budget. It is in line with previous Government commitments – the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Carbon Budgets, international commitments, and the Net Zero commitment in 2050.

We have an exciting opportunity for postdoc to join our group at @bas.ac.uk and take part in two big ice core projects: www.beyondepica.eu and @fetch4.bsky.social. Package includes: mugs, stickers, maps, trips to Copenhagen, Grenoble and (maybe) Greenland. bas.ciphr-irecruit.com/applicants/v...

🌊 Save the date! The Ocean Sciences Meeting (OSM) is coming to Glasgow, Scotland, 22-27 Feb 2026—the first OSM outside the U.S.! 🌍 Join scientists, students, journalists and more to grow our global ocean community, foster partnerships and build a sustainable future.

UK/European Ocean modellers and ML peeps *save the date* ‘Machine Learning for Ocean Modelling’ workshop University of Reading on 24-25 June, 2025 🌊👩‍💻 There will be keynote talks, short talks, and posters presented across some important themes, such as hybrid modelling and benchmarking.

🤓🌊

Anyone interested in a 2-year postdoc working on modelling ocean alkalinity enhancement and sediment feedbacks? It can be based in Paris or Aix-en-Provence. 🌊

Need a distraction of playing with beautiful data? Our Observations Portal displays all the live data from our #gliders: observations.voiceoftheocean.org - or you could dive into the full datasets via the Dashboard tab 🌊 Video shows 4 years of temperature data from the Bornholm Basin observatory.

The extent of sea ice globally is now at an absolute record low level for the entire satellite-era. [Graphics: zacklabe.com/global-sea-i.... Note: the poles are affected by very different Earth system processes/seasonality. I am using 5-day running mean data.]

📝NEW paper out today🥳 ❄️We look at extreme snow and rain (yes, rain!) in West Antarctica over the Thwaites and Pine Island ice shelves. In it, we show that atmospheric rivers - long, thin "rivers in the sky" that bring tons of heat & moisture - deliver huge amounts of snow... and even rain 🌧️ 1/8

Climate action globally is under threat. It’s hugely urgent to seize initiative from rightwing populists. We need to change tactics: start by building climate resilience in local communities where people can feel tangible benefits – we’re calling it climate popularism. @rupertread.bsky.social & me🧵

What’s your vision for the next International Polar Year? 🤔 Shape the next decade of polar research! ❄️🌍 #PECWS2025 invites early career researchers to share their priorities. 👉 Submit your input by 23 Feb 2025 www.pecws.org/input 📢 Attending or not, your voice matters!

It's hard to convey how barrier breaking this is. Weather + climate people have always collaborated internationally, simply because weather does not respect national borders. Even during the Cold War, US + Russia shared weather observations. To be told this is to be told to "stop doing your job"

Beautiful! 🇦🇶🌊

Soon on our way to the Fram strait thanks to a NERC-funded Seedcorn grant and our colleages at U Bergen. We will investigate organic matter transport and export along the East Greenland margin. @sotonoceanearth.bsky.social

🔮 What does the future hold for our oceans and their ability to soak up carbon from the atmosphere? That's what a team of scientists are hoping to learn more about, as they embark on a 51 day voyage around the Southern Ocean. 🌊 It's time for a thread 🧵 /1

Excited to get started on the second @canari-science.bsky.social sprint today! Going to be analysing large ensemble runs this week, looking at Arctic Ocean properties 🌊

Here's my thoughts on the latest round of discussion about the slowing of the Atlantic overturning circulation. It's a bit nerdy - but the short summary is: in my view the balance of evidence strongly suggests that the #AMOC has slowed since the late 19th C. 🌊 www.realclimate.org/index.php/ar...

Fancy a year diving and doing oceanogrpahy in Antarctica, or know someone who might? Job advert out for wintering Ocean Scientist post (job previously known as Marine Assistant) and many others. Please apply, or share. bas.ciphr-irecruit.com/applicants/v...

The data is in. 2024 was the warmest year on record, and probably in the whole of human history – about 1.6°C warmer than the pre-industrial period. More than 1 billion individual thermometer measurements, made by thousands of people over many decades, have been condensed into a single number.

This ice is old. Like, *OLD* old 🧊⌛ In search of climate data from 1.2 million years ago, scientists have just sampled some of the oldest ice on earth for the first time! The full ice core is 2.8km long - drilled deep through the thick East Antarctic ice sheet down to bedrock. #climatescience 🧪

Huge congratulations to the ‘Beyond EPICA’ team for pushing the ice-core reconstruction of Earth’s atmosphere back to 1,200,000 years at Little Dome C! 🥳👏 www.bbc.com/news/article...
