I lived in Birmingham 2009-2020, and have gone back to work there this year. I don't remember a single year without cuts.

My support evaporated pretty quickly, but this is just sickening. Asylum seekers, and many other immigrants, come to this country in search of a better life. We have a duty to provide that. Instead, Labour are throwing them to the dogs. Their swing to the hard right is sick.

Good afternoon to nearly everyone! This is another absolute BANGER of a campaign from the wonderful folks at @cleancitiescampaign.org cleancitiescampaign.org/carspreading/

1. Here are just a few of the ways in which Starmer’s Labour Party seems determined to alienate its voters and lose the next election. As they pile up, you have to keep pinching yourself and asking, “what the hell is it playing at?” 🧵

💚 Nature valentines 💚

Government are either a) doing the wrong things (eg. considering new oil fields) or b) doing the right things far too slow (eg reducing Drax subsidies not removing altogether). They have become traitors to their own promises and they think it will make them popular, can't see that working.

A little greenery, a few bollards, and a simple sign - suddenly, the street belongs to people again. Safe streets for kids don’t need big budgets, just the right priorities #PlayStreet

We might yearn for paradise, temporal or spiritual. But to our descendents our habitable planet will look like an almost unimaginable paradise. No tech fantasy, no space station or controlled environment will ever compare. Fight for what we have. This is our heaven, and there can be no other.

The loss of Arctic sea ice this year compared to the mean for the 2010s amounts to over 3 times the surface area of the UK, for instance...

Can democrats stop the coup? Potentially...

Clean air zones save lives, money and ease the strain on the NHS. What's not to like?

You’d be forgiven for thinking this was vindictive: • Recalled to prison because wrist “too small” for tag • Spent Xmas, New Year, 78th Bday in prison • Term extended for being “unlawfully at large” while released • Released on same tag previously deemed “too big” Privatisation in action.

This makes me sick. It makes me seeth. I said Labour would be Tory-lite. If anything, they're even worse than I expected. Climate change will kill billions. How does Starmer not get it? You can't profit your way out of extinction.

'Dynamic pricing' is now also apparently dynamic pay. All workers deserve basic rights, and the gig economy must be regulated.

UK courts are broken. “I had climbed on to the roof of a building and sat down for half a day, two years ago, and that’s worthy of a year in prison? Social workers had advised the court that no more than a fine or community service was appropriate…” www.theguardian.com/environment/...

#Gaza today. No words.

Musk's fascist salutes are a signal, showing how far he intends to go. They point to the destruction of democracy he seeks, the impunity, the violent pursuit of power. They point to the empire he wants to build, and to the degradation of all our lives as he sets out to crush our humanity.

✨Girlguiding Cymru Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day ✨ Today, we remember the incredible Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a champion of equality and justice for all. His dream of a world where everyone is treated with equality is one we wholeheartedly share. #MartinLutherKingJrDay

50% of the population of the world will die with 3° of warming by 2050 (when I would be 59 years old) Still think it isn't relevant to you and your life?

What a day.

Anyone in Brum tomorrow lunchtime- get down to this. (Sad I can't go but it's my first day at my new job...)

THIS is why I take Direct Action to halt climate collapse. We are not being alarmist: 'At 3C or more of heating by 2050, there could be more than 4 billion deaths, significant sociopolitical fragmentation worldwide, failure of states, and extinction events.' www.theguardian.com/environment/...

I'm grieving Neil Gaiman turning out to be a monster a lot harder than I thought I would be.

Ecosystem collapse within 10 years. And most of the risks within 2 years are linked to or exacerbated by climate collapse

Constantly baffled by just how much people don't seem to get it (and well aware that I'm posting this into an echo chamber, it just makes me feel better to share my feelings)

Thank you to Tahir Ali, @liambyrnemp.bsky.social and Ayoub Khan for pledging your support for the Climate & Nature Bill backed by @zero-hour.bsky.social ahead of its second reading on 24th January. Will Birmingham's seven other MPs pledge their support for this vital legislation?

The current politic refusal to invest in *anything* is incredibly frustrating. Councils have been cut to the bone so I don't blame them. But schools have hired lollipop people for decades. Pay people for their work.

The three richest men in the world are all genuflecting before Trump. All to curry favor so they can maintain their control over our political and economic systems — and to avoid accountability for their abuses of power. This is what oligarchy looks like.

Just Stop Oil trio who targeted ex-Tory MP Mark Jenkinson NOT GUILTY - and rightly so Three Just Stop Oil supporters who fly posted the office of an ex-Tory MP to draw attention to his lies about a coal mine have been acquitted www.thecanary.co/uk/news/2025...

My immediate response to this is pure anger. Yes, I hate the tories. But every political party has some decent policies. Imagine labour saying 'we've decided we're cutting all funding for schools, no more free education' 'What, why?' 'Because funding education was Tory policy'

Disgusting in every sense of the word. Labour are acting like nothing but spineless servants to profit, with no regard for either the people or the planet.

If you're wondering why the hell there is enough traction for an extreme right climate denying group to open a wing in the UK...

Gaie Delap is a 78-year-old retired teacher and Political Prisoner in the UK. Gaie was sentenced to 20months in prison for taking nonviolent action to call for an end to new North Sea oil & gas licenses. @just-stopoil.bsky.social WON on this demand. So why is Gaie still in prison? 1/3

This needs to become law ASAP, let's hope it gets through!

A just transition is absolutely key to ensuring communities are made stronger, not debilitated, by decarbonisation. And a just transition doesn't mean max profits, so it won't happen if corporations are in charge.

Cuba is a Socialist country and one of the poorest in the world suffering under a 60+ year economic blockade by the richest country in the world. Guess which one has better healthcare, life expectancy, literacy, lower infant mortality and every type of crime. It ain't the USA.

I have to read this.
