Pleased to share FERC comments filed by 9 states (CT, DE, ME, MA, MD, NJ, NY, RI, and VT) noting the importance of interregional transmission & identifying "low regrets" interregional transmission needs! Summary of NERC, DOE & other studies in the Appendix! πŸ’‘πŸ”Œ energyinstitute.jhu.edu/wp-content/u...

Connecting infrastructure to the grid has been a passion since I worked on FERC's original Order 2003. Surplus interconnection is fast and provides states a tool to accelerate policy achievement even in the face of long queues. Great to work with β€ͺ@mfarmer.bsky.social & the GridLab team!

Who thinks the rise of DeepSeek will appreciably reduce data center demand growth? Leaving aside whether DeepSeek itself is a game-changer, is there a next generation of AI development that tries to work smarter, not harder, with the attendent decrease in electricity consumption? #energysky

Delighted to report that Mrs. EnergyAbe (a.k.a. Dr. Jenny Greene) won a Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring for her work teaching algebra and math to inmates in New Jersey's state and federal prisons! Woot! www.whitehouse.gov/ostp/news-up...

New complaint re: PJM capacity prices from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania πŸ‘€πŸ”₯ Main argument is that "it is currently physically impossible for new resources to respond to high [auction] signals and enter PJM’s marketplace.” Full complaint here: www.pjm.com/-/media/DotC... πŸ”ŒπŸ’‘

Matching electricity consumption with the carbon intensity of the grid has great potential reduce emissions, and to improve how GHG impacts are measured. I was pleased to support a letter highlighting the potential and need for better metrics. πŸ”ŒπŸ’‘ expertconsensusoncarbonimpact.com

Even meeting half of the projected demand from new data centers in Virginia over the next 15 years will prove difficult, said a report released by a legislative commission. #energyskyπŸ”ŒπŸ’‘ See Full Story: ow.ly/zY9u50UoMLR Writer: James Downing

Opinion piece at Utility Dive on how state and federal regulators need to work together to address data center costs and protect consumers, since neither can do it alone! Thanks to Sue Glatz and Mahala Lahvis for co-authoring. We make four points. #energysky www.utilitydive.com/news/regulat...

PJM's Board letter is a must-read for those interested in clean energy policy. The specific roadmap is important, but more relevant is the PJM's assertion that there is simply not enough clean energy to maintain reliability without new (likely gas) generation. πŸ”ŒπŸ’‘ www.pjm.com/-/media/DotC...

AD24-11 Recap: Constellation. Definitions wins wars! Consto loves "Fully Isolated Co-Located Load." Who could assess transmission charges on FICLLs"? Seriously, a thoughtful filing from Consto with several suggestions for steps FERC could take and some overtures on $ for ancillary services. πŸ”ŒπŸ’‘

AD24-11 Recap: Talen argues colocaters should pay for transmiss. service to the extent it actively uses the grid (eg, on net load). Not surprising; but I suspect the economics would support paying transmission charges on gross load. Speed + regulatory certainty > minimizing costs, no? πŸ”ŒπŸ’‘

AD24-11 Recap: Agree with AEU's point that co-location is largely a symptom of a dysfunctional grid & we need an "all of the above" approach to resource adequacy. Less convinced that large BTM loads reduce congestion - but feel free to correct me #energysky! elibrary.ferc.gov/eLibrary/fil...

AD24-11 Recap: love the pro-market optimism of LS: "Saying β€œno” is not an option – we have to find a way to β€œyes”... We need to identify barriers, knock them down and then let the creativity of the competitive market[.]" Less sold on the jurisdictional analysis. πŸ”ŒπŸ’‘ elibrary.ferc.gov/eLibrary/fil...

AD24-11 recap: Data Center Coalition's comments are refreshing: "Put simply, if upgrades or services are provided by the grid to serve the co-located load, DCC supports those services being paid for by the co-located load." They also take on load forecasting and iX reform. πŸ”ŒπŸ’‘

Interested in data center colocation? So are Sue Glatz and I! Today, we filed comments (on behalf of ourselves) in the technical conference docket talking about the need for new approaches to colocation cost allocation and planning. Filing available here! #energysky elibrary.ferc.gov/eLibrary/fil...

From today's PJM Load Analysis Subcommittee meeting showing load growth expectations over the next 20 years. What do folks think? How would you grade PJM's work? Note: "Load Adjustment" = data center+manufacturing growth. #energysky

Not an energy story, but flagging this beautiful article on Princeton's Prison Teaching Initiative. I taught with them; and it's an amazing experience to go inside and teach inmates who are just so hungry to learn. Props to the wife who was there at the beginning! nassauweekly.com/closest-to-t...

Nothing like estranged family members duking it out over the Thanksgiving table! Today's family members are Exelon and Constellation, who were cosy corporate affiliates just a couple of years ago. Now, nuke operator Constellation has harsh words for their ex.... πŸ”ŒπŸ’‘ elibrary.ferc.gov/eLibrary/fil...
