I guess that's why they abandoned the idea of using Guantanomo - too expensive and still subject to US laws. Far easier to outsource the problem to an extrajudicial prison state. That's quite apart from the illegality of doing this to American citizens.

Precisely. Tens of billions to compensate them. But only to the huge farms, the mom-n-pop operations got short change. So you rake in billions in tariffs - paid for by US consumers - then spend tens of billions to compensate US producers.
How about we just have a CHIPS act for all US industry?

How about we give tax cuts to those who manufacture in the US? 0% corporate tax for companies who use 100% US materials, US factories, and US labor? Double the tax rate for those who don't do any of those, prorate in between.

I'm pretty convinced they are currently buying up financial positions and will then announce a complete ban on exports to the US. Walmart, Amazon, and many, many other mega corps will have no stocks in no time at all. They can weather it, the US won't.

It's not that he has an evil plan, it's that he simply does not care either because he is stupid or his advisors are stupid.
He probably assumes that we'll have recovered by the mid-terms but this is a 2008 scale crash and he'll then ask for trillions more to fix it which will take years.

Maybe not the intent but a useful side effect. All his inner party members were well positioned for the inevitable crash with hedges, they have made $$$ like crazy. They don't care about 401ks because their wealth is mostly not in them. On the rebound they will also make $$$ like crazy.
