They didn’t know the song. They probably asked AI for a list of military songs and since Fortunate Son is like the anthem of the Vietnam War, they picked it without knowing the words.

Side note I’ve been trying to find and answer to: were women allowed in the parade? I’m assuming so since there haven’t been any news stories but I haven’t seen one in any video yet.

It’s a complex issue that diplomacy probably could have fixed before Trump scrapped the nuclear deal Obama made. I understand why they would want nukes. I know why their neighbors wouldn’t. I don’t know that war is the proper solution.

Maybe Iran was close to a bomb, maybe they weren’t, but I can understand people’s skepticism when we’ve been fed stories like that photo was telling for so long. They’ve been two months away from a bomb since at least 2001.

My favorite part is when Iran retaliated and Netanyahu was like “you crossed the line!”

It’s crazy how reliant our leaders are on cable news and social media. You can trace how stories shape their policies. They should have experts on speed dial, not Rachel Maddow or Sean Hannity.

Which seven Dems voted to confirm Kristi Noem? Here they are: Sen. John Fetterman (Pa.) Sen. Maggie Hassan (N.H.) Sen. Tim Kaine (Va.) Sen. Andy Kim (N.J.) Sen. Gary Peters (Mich.) Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (N.H.) Sen. Elissa Slotkin (Mich.)

I’m not sure the Guard, made up of 19 year olds raised on Fox News, Prager U and Andrew Tate are going to see that as a negative.

The immediate resorting to guns and force for every encounter is out of hand.

He’s not saying anything people haven’t been saying for years. A true leader provides actionable leadership. He can’t just add his voice to the chorus if he wants to really be considered a leader.

I’m going to need more than snarky statements before I believe Newsom is capable of anything useful.

I don’t know you but that seems pretty disingenuous. People who call for peace mean peace for everyone. But tens of thousands of casualties later the cold hard truth is, is it worth it to lay waste to an entire people for a handful of hostages? There was absolutely no other way to get them back?

Jesus Christ don’t tell people to bring their kids to an event that will likely be attacked with tear gas or rubber bullets. Human shields to prove a point? Holy shit.

LAPD could do a hell of a lot for their image if they formed a line between protestors and Guard and ICE. It’ll never happen but if it did…

Having a march is one thing, but the levels of weaponry and transport gives this a really sinister vibe.

The Roman Empire wasn’t falling when the New Testament was written. So…uh…that’s a flawed first premise.

The middle of the 20th century sure loved cottage cheese.

There seems to be more and more communal resistance so I imagine we’re pretty close to a full blown fight one of these times the Gestapo show up somewhere.

Why isn’t the DNC or whoever funding national commercials cut together of ICE raids to really drive home the brutality and insanity of the levels of force they’re using on people who aren’t dangerous?

The way I look at it is the Guard exist to be a Swiss Army knife. Their purpose is to fight but also to do lots of peacekeeping and emergency assistance. Cops exist solely to intimidate.

So I’ve noticed when it’s a Democratic policy it’s halted during review, when it’s a Republican one it’s allowed to continue during review.

Damn, Asimov, too? I just learned about Clarke from this thread and those two were my favorite sci-do guys growing up.

Sometimes it seems everyone in the 70s and 80s was a pedophile/racist/shitbag.

They should be like cigarette ads. Sure, you can gamble. But it can’t be advertised where kids can see.

Wow, even the NYT misuses “breaking news.”

Britain is dealing with the same things we are. It seems like their system might be slightly more robust and their conservatives ever so slightly less radical, but to go through all the trouble of emigration just to end up where you started would be disappointing.

It’s awfully convenient the perfect alignment of authority in the world always matches their identity, huh?

They all affect that old school almost Atlantic accent, too. The most insufferable, pretentious edgelords from middle school.

Because American society and politics has become so regimented (if you believe X you must also believe Y) it’s hard for a lot of people to remember that a lot of people don’t fit into a neat ideological box.

I think it’s more likely Americans conflate supporting Palestinians with leftism despite there being a super prominent conservative bent to Palestinians. Supporting non-white groups is often seen as leftist in America regardless of the person’s actual politics.

They do. Every time. They say it so often I think just tune it out now. For as far back as I can remember this is the one talking point Democrats have consistently embraced.

Meanwhile my local party didn’t even spend all it raised in 2024, and as far as I can tell didn’t spend any of it on candidates.

That’s wild. We spent 7 years watching advertising destroy lives and in the end the message that Don was doing the *wrong kind* of advertising?

Weiner *intended* it to seem as if he changed? We definitely see growth and change in his character but I interpreted it the cynical way that no matter how far he runs, his desire to create (and make money) is his main drive.
