GOP platform in 2016: "We support maintaining and, if warranted, increasing sanctions, together with our allies, against Russia unless and until Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are fully restored." GOP 2025:

Yes! Without that approach it would be nearly impossible to extract the right lesson from the work

This song has been looping in my head all morning. open.spotify.com/track/0RO5cr...

Maybe hating on dick bosses is the great unifier, the thing that brings all Americans together.

Entire government agencies are being reshaped, career experts are leaving and power is shifting — often behind closed doors. ProPublica is investigating. 🧵⬇️ (1/6)

Musk has the power to fire regulators who oversee his businesses, and the procurement officers who provide his government contracts. The US govt uses its dwindling power to pressure allies not to regulate him, and to target judges who have rule against him.

A great talk series organized by science departments at NYU had to be cancelled because the speakers had concerns for their safety. I’ve received violent threats before, so I get it. It stinks, but it’s an old story: right-wing movements usually target the universities first.

How Dunning-Kruger works... and travels.

The Southern District of New York has been ordered to drop the charges against Eric Adams “without prejudice.” This means DoJ can reinstate the charges the minute Adams fails to do Trump’s bidding vis-à-vis immigration. In some circles, that’s called extortion. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

One of our supporters shared this with us—people are getting creative tonight!

If you live in New York State and think Gov. Kathy Hochul should remove the corrupt mayor of NYC, give her a call or send her a letter.

RFK, Jr. is not a "vaccine sceptic." He is a vaccine denier. He is anti-vaccine. Do not capitulate to their newspeak.

Ugh, ANES is on the chopping block.

NYU economist Bill Easterly, the leading free-market critic of foreign aid, was asked about Musk’s and Trump’s assault on USAID: “It’s illegal and it’s undemocratic,” he said. “Even if I like the idea of moving away from aid, I cannot condone this horrific way to go about it.”

"Gaza development plan" is such an Orwellian turn of phrase, such an abuse of language to normalize a proposed ethnic cleansing

Lead story in @nytimes.com tonight speaks to one small way protests help shape national discussion: photos. Without protest, how would a news org visualize this debate? Treasury, computers, DOGE? Many feature Musk smiling. Here we see the drama of public opposition, which also helps justify story.

1/8. This week I had a few different conversations with scholars who, in the face of the attacks on science and institutions of learning in the U.S., are wondering what to do. One suggestion I have is: keep doing your work. It matters in and of itself. Why do I say that? A few reasons.

Will someone remove Elon’s Glasgow Block.

It’s wild that an unelected tech-bro can run hog wild through the federal bureaucracy, destroying agencies funded by acts of congress, and people are like, “huh.”

is it woke to want to end cancer?

This is an abomination.

@nytimes.com: "taking over," "driving out," "relocating"? Call it what it is. Trump's plan for the region is to ethnically cleanse Gaza and build beach resorts to profit him and his family. Kushner: “Gaza’s waterfront property could be very valuable ... Move the people out and then clean it up.”

I would really love to see the NYT & WaPo treat the current political situation with even half the level of alarm they used last year in reporting that Biden was old

A political party should not just be a fundraising machine that wakes up when there is an election. It should be a venue of constant political activity that ties local neighborhoods to a broader coalition of interests.

I know we can’t run around on fire every time Trump says something but he appears to have just announced the new US policy on Gaza which is to take ownership of it, ethnically cleanse it of the 1.8 million Palestinians there and maintain a long term ownership stake as it’s “developed.”

Trump urges ethnic cleansing of Gaza so that the US can turn it into a tourist destination. Netanyahu smiles approvingly. Christ, what a sickening mix of racism and greed.

Congressional delegation outside USAID now: “We are here to shed a light on a crime unfolding before our eyes.”

People have gathered outside USAID HQ for press event with Democratic Congressmen Beyer, Raskin, Connolly and Olzewski and Senator Van Hollen where they're addressing the building's mysterious shutdown today in the midst of the Trump admin dismantling the agency. (Photos shared with me)

Still getting DNC fundraising texts! I’m like, “No. We gave you A BILLION DOLLARS.”

I realized last week that a bunch of what I said in class could have gotten me in trouble if I worked at certain public universities. I did like 7 CRTs! I’m lucky to work where I do. Not that the cretins running the government can’t reach us there (see: federal grants), but it’s some insulation.

Telling a social scientist they can’t teach about structural racism/classism/etc. is a bit like telling a quantum physicist they can’t talk about spin or superposition or an evolutionary biologist that they can’t talk about kin selection or inclusive fitness. All are essential explanatory tools.

The Tea Party mobilized over far less than Trump has executed in the last two weeks and was able to shift national media coverage to a focus on debt for months.

This is what happens when you ask me to help sanewash the Trump tariffs.

My students just read selections from _The Authoritarian Personality_. In their agenda, if not method, Adorno et al. feel more relevant than ever. It took 75 years, but the scenario that worried them is now playing out: the rise of an anti-democratic movement targeting universities, all of it.

The Internet Archive has to date downloaded 500 terabytes of US government websites, which it crawls at the end of every presidential term. The whole archive is fully searchable. This effort's housed by a donation-funded nonprofit, not a branch of the US government. blog.archive.org/2024/05/08/e...
