As a philosophy major who adored symbolic logic courses, this may be my favorite cartoon ever.

I'm delighted to announce the 5th edition of Programming Language Pragmatics! I joined Michael Scott as a coauthor. We updated the semantics chapter to use inference rules, & substantially updated coverage of types, OO, codegen, Rust ownership & safe concurrency, async, traits & more!

The administration's war on the US is simply insane. Let's destroy the best universities in the world. Let's leave tens of millions of Americans without healthcare. Tank the stock market. Render the US hostile to any and all investment. Abandon global leadership! Yolo!

When you elect an incompetent administration, you don't get to have nice things.

"When the Sprite turns golden brown, you're good to go." Uh, no thanks.

⛔️ Big NIH update: We just learned of 726 more NIH grants that were terminated sometime over the past 2 months. A huge number of diversity supps, diversity F31s, and diversity training grants. See below ⤵️ View them here: grant-watch.us/nih-data.html h/t to @noamross.net for processing them.

Hooray! 🎉

My wife and I were at the Utah Symphony concert last night, which was cut short by an on-stage medical emergency. We are very glad to learn that the orchestra’s associate principal oboe player, James Hall, is recovering. utahartsreview.com/2025/05/musi...

I updated the NYTimes @nytimes.com app on my iPad, and now the "Play" tab is... empty! This is going to seriously challenge my #Wordle streak.

🇳🇴 Gratulerer med dagen to my Norwegian friends and family! #SyttendeMai

Yesterday I read the word "emended" in a book and thought it was a typo for "amended." But I was wrong: "emend" is a word that means "change so as to correct." I learned a new word!

More context: Our tracker (grant-watch.us) currently lists 877 terminated NIH grants. We have 820 rows in the tracker, but some rows list multiple grants. As of yesterday, NIH RePORTER listed 807 NIH grants specifically at Harvard. So we're looking at over 1600 formally terminated NIH grants now.

If you have an idea for a presentation you’d like to give at RacketCon 2025, please write to [email protected] for consideration. All Racket-y ideas are welcome. We’d love to have you! con.racket-lang.org #RacketLang #Racket #Lisp

Not a killer crab, then?

"Permanent."

It seems like a lovely, cool September day in Salt Lake City today.

@noamross.net, @scott-delaney.bsky.social and @anthonybarente.bsky.social are doing crucial work tracking NIH grants that are disappearing, and in some cases coming back. check it out 👇

There's a lot of chatter around the proposal being inserted into a budget bill that would put a moratorium on any AI legislation being passed by the states for the next 10 years. I thought I'd say a bit about why this is an absolutely disastrous move. www.404media.co/republicans-... 1/n

This is going to hurt American competitiveness and result in fewer scientific advancements, fewer chances to train the next generation of scientists, and a lower quality of life for everyone. We need to reverse these harmful changes to our critical scientific infrastructure.

you know who else came from chicago and was on "a mission from god"

1/ The US government has ordered the Swedish city of Stockholm to end its diversity, inclusivity and equality (DEI) programmes within 10 days. The city authorities say the demand is "bizarre" and they won't be complying. ⬇️

Sad news for me: USENIX ATC 2025 will be the last USENIX ATC. "...in the spirit of our ever-evolving community... we announce the bittersweet conclusion of our longest-running event, the USENIX Annual Technical Conference in July 2025, following USENIX ATC '25." www.usenix.org/blog/usenix-...

⭐ Because it's where global talent is welcomed. ⭐ Because it's where you have the freedom to learn and invent. ⭐ Because we offer a high quality of life. ⭐ Because of our scientific excellence. To all researchers around the world, our message is clear: Choose Science, Choose Europe. 🇪🇺

Some grim updates on NSF grant terminations. ❌ ~1,382 grants terminated over a 15 day period ❌ $1.07 billion in total grant value ❌ Half (441 / 902) of the entire Division of Equity for Excellence in STEM portfolio is gone No indication terminations have stopped. grant-watch.us/nsf-data.html
