These two…. Mac (black lab) got a bit jealous when Oreo jumped into my lap, not being aggressive, but just put his head into my lap, right up against Oreo.

This thread - Outreach and giving GOOD talks in a nutshell!

These people protected US forests and lands. Their jobs have now vanished due to Trump

A great outreach on Climate Change from University of Melbourne aimed at kids. Hosts do a great job - not too heavy, keeps an optimistic tone, but real, honest answers. Not too simple, not too complex! Thank you @katharinehayhoe.com for putting this in your newsletter. 🧪 youtu.be/v1aq1dfgocc?...

While doing my postdoc I did a number of outreach efforts based on the fisheries visual sampling system we developed. Putting a video system between the belly and cod end of a trawl net ( see: www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHLy... ). This piece ended up in a couple pubs and a Museum exhibit: 🧪🐡🦑🐟

Luna taking advantage of the first truly nice (if “brisk” upper 30s) day in a few weeks here. The Catio, and attached cat yard are open for business.

Just got off phone w/ Mom. (yes 1am here) At Christmas I casually said she was ADHD like me, but she had never thought of it (mind she is 70+). She thanked me tonight, said she now feels better (emotionally) than in decades. Also told me dad (retired Military Judge) acknowledged her ADHD. Tears

Shell replenishment works - it is not overnight, and there are prerequisite conditions - but it does work.

100%! I will show up, for science and for democracy.

Me: runs multiple application & storage servers out of basement, controls home via shell scripts...runs major conferences IT/AV professionally. Also me: spends 5m cussing trying to use desktop keyboard to write message to my son via phone, because I put phone above keyboard to watch vids

100% We MUST advocate FOR science

Who could possibly resist such beautiful iridescent chelicera?? Not sure the species but what a charismastic spider! 🐙

Ok... now that conference prep is put to bed. Time to get the next edition of the journal as close as possible - Don't want to have to do full court press when I get back... 3 full page multi-panels to relay out, one chart that has really poor colour use, (and not colour blind safe) so rebuild that

Oy vey! That was a VERY long night, but got it done. Poster designed and populated with descriptions of 40+ films and videos for the Film Fest. Pulled inspiration from old posters for the Orpheum and interior details of the theater. Most likely no one will "get it" unless they are from NOLA, but..

Random trivia learned while trying to develop a “film fast” poster for the conference - the first profitable indoor theater was in New Orleans - opened July 26, 1896 Vitascope Hall @ 623 Canal was the only profitable theater of 40 that used Edison’s initial Vitascope projector

Ok... kinda not loving Adobe for past couple years, and moving towards Affinity + Open source stuff, but... This made me smile as I remember this screen! Oly Shite! That means I have been using PS for 35 bloody years????? Lordy Im old!!!

This is very important imagery. Especially on US soil. At this exact time in history.

NOLA friends and fans - Which should I feature for a "Film Fest" poster as the backdrop - The Orpheum or The Fillmore I like that Orpheum is from 1918 and did show movies, but the music history of the Fillmore....

Every night Brenna and I watch one show (often Father Brown, or Star Trek) and _almost_ every night this is where Oreo can be found for that hour.

What was originally marginally true enough to be funny satire… is now so flabbergasting true that it now triggers laughing sarcastically or hysterically so you don’t cry and bury yourself in a barrel of whiskey.

Wow, this _may_ change my mind about utility of current gen AI and its impact on society (and “proof” that “AI” is at its core a tool. One that mostly is used for unethical - art generation, writing homework or essay - or at best lazy uses, but like any tool _can_ be used for good?)

‘The last plant left’: can Rapa Nui’s extinct tree be resurrected? Seeds from the last toromiro, unique to remote Easter Island, were taken away in the 1960s. Now, after a crucial discovery gave hope for its survival, it is making a return www.theguardian.com/environment/...

I love seafood and federal science.

(shhh don't let "Science" hear this - they'll kick me out of the club) I am a bit of jack-of-all-trades type. In a previous life I was a theater nerd, have animation work credits (IATSE local 839) Now I find myself again doing props, and creature effects makeup for this years conference. Weird life!

The "lips", mouth and radula (think toothed tongue) of a common Slipper Snail (Crepidula fornicata) a common marine snail here (invasive in Europe). Approximately 67x magnification. Love seeing the radula clearly as it grasps a string of mucous and algae ( green tinted grey "rope") 🐡🐙🦑🧪

If I had a band or a label, I would do a punk cover of "No More Kings" from Schoolhouse Rock. And then I would gather a bunch of people to write a whole album of next-generation Schoolhouse Rock songs, with songs about Social Security and Medicaid and NOAA. I am not kidding in the least.

🙄 to ESRI. 👍 to @mapquest.com for letting us name the water between the nation of Mexico and Cuba whatever we want: gulfof.mapquest.com

These types of season shift mismatches between species are pernicious, often tricky to pin down, biologically and economically dangerous and worst part is there is little (currently) that can be done to mediate, except what we are already failing to do - get a handle on minimizing climate change

Deep-sea amphipods are literally incorporating microplastics into their bodies. Our trash is reaching places we haven’t even explored yet. Great job, humanity. royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/...

Can animals learn magnetic cues for navigation? Sea turtles can! And they appear to use two different mechanisms for magnetoreception I wonder how this translates to birds 🧪🪶🦑 www.nature.com/articles/s41...
