Why does this get the benefit of the doubt as ignorance? It's instrumental dishonesty.

That wasn't really your original assertion, and what people are rejecting is the obvious result: people who know nothing "earning" their way into positions for which are unprepared. It's akin to stolen valor, or a degree achieved via plagiarism. Good enough for many companies maybe!
