This Super Bowl Sunday, here's a reminder of what real courage looks like.

The world would be a better place without American football. Full stop.

Not today, Satan

A friend asked me about the potential risk of losing public broadcasting funding. If you're interested, I recommend this comprehensive report from "On The Media," which explains what's always saved CPB funding in the past, and why it might not now. www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/otm...

So I realize it's state-level rather than federal, but still: if we want to eliminate government waste, how about we stop picking on the kid on food assistance and fire the state university head coaches? I'm sure some of those obscene salaries could be put to good use elsewhere.

The artist, David Cohen is an Asheville-based artist/musician and resident of over forty years. His cartoon work spans various subjects ranging from local issues based in Asheville to more national political events and even to one-off, word-play-oriented jokes. ❤️ Give credit to artists when you can.

Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde is the Christian that Franklin Graham failed to be.

Todays mood in verse: There is a new king Who cares naught for his subjects. How they cheer him so!

For all the bleakness of today, I had a nifty bright spot--my story "Reliance" featured in the Top in Fiction Substack. Thank you, @ericadrayton.substack.com !

As the world melts down, I'm focusing on things I know for sure. Among them: friendship begins not with similarity, but with self-giving.

Poem by Joseph Fasano

In this exhausting cultural moment, when everything feels so cold and tenuous and fear is so easy, we are united in both grief and mortality.

Refreshing to see a pastor with moral courage.

In case anyone wonders what it's like leading a nonprofit these days.

More of this energy please!

Writing is a spiritual practice. You will write words that no one will ever see. Words between you and the infinite. An offering.

Flashback post.

Rejecting your religion might be the only way to keep your faith.

This election result isn't about Dem messaging. Kamala Harris and Tim Walz formed a balanced ticket filled with character, intellect, and genuine love for this country, and they delivered their vision beautifully and eloquently. johnpavlovitz.substack.com/p/no-the-dem...

“We can disagree and still love each other unless your disagreement is rooted in my oppression and denial of my humanity and right to exist” — James Baldwin

If we can’t articulate a different way of living, we are trapped in the one handed to us. The key to counter living is counter speech.

Indeed. When they rounded up the Japanese Americans, myself and my family included, for internment during WWII out of fear over Japanese spies and saboteurs, two thirds of us were U.S. citizens. Don’t think it won’t happen again when they come for the “undocumented.”

I hate football. But it does my heart good to know the home team loses on a day they promote Hulk Hogan’s beer.

“Totalitarianism in power invariably replaces all first-rate talents, regardless of their sympathies, with those crackpots and fools whose lack of intelligence and creativity is still the best guarantee of their loyalty.” “Origins of Totalitarianism”, Hannah Arendt @DemocracyDocket.com
