It's like having your phone out ignoring your partner during sex... or just telling them to use a toy... because the other person in this case is still a person. Metaphor kind of breaks down because grading a paper isn't much like sex.
A dick drawing on a napkin is worth more than the entirety of generative AI. I didn’t choose art for money or fame I chose it because it is what I love and it takes a lot of work to do something that you love. AI as a whole has an absence of soul and beauty that an imperfect sketch would have.
The problem is, I am taking classes that I don’t care about so it is extremely painful to write lol the classes I actually care about get me to yapping though
But did the student leave the ChatGPT prompts in their paper? I mean, if you are going to cheat do a good job of it. My exact comment to students have done that, plus a grade of zero of course.
I feel for students who want to use AI to avoid having to do work they feel is drudgery. I also recognize that the writing assignments they are being given are being assigned as drudgery. If we want students to want to write, we must give them a prompt they want to answer for themselves.
As a student who has used AI and grew up in a world without it, I can definitely acknowledge that I was a better learner and student without AI. It has definitely taken away an element of curiosity that is lacking in this day and age.
The student turns to AI to create generate approval.
The teacher should wonder "Did I let them speak or did I silence them? Did I offer support when they didn't understand, or did I fail them? Did I allow opinions that differ from my own? Am I the reason?"
there is something very specific about the way ai sucks at poems, very similar to when people do song lyrics, idk how to word it, but its always so grating
If half of your degree is useless information that won't benefit you in your field (most Gen eds) using AI is justified imo. College is too expensive for me to be wasting my time and money on it like that.
You never know what might be useful in your future. Life is not just your job, and a good college teaches you to be a person that can learn new ideas and not just another body to do a job, which is important in our changing environment.
Please describe the hoops you're referring to. I hope it's not actively learning your future profession or how to properly construct discussions to inform or persuade an audience based on research performed by experts.
Fwiw, I encourage my students to use AI for drafting, brainstorming, topic summarization, spell check, and grammar but always enforce that it's not a replacement for research or their own voice or viewpoints.
i feel bad for students rn. AI saturation is making student life tough imo. they're pushed apps like grammarly to supposedly help them refine/edit their work and then nailed for using it!
A man with fourteen fingers, drives a car with 9-spoke wheels and seven turn signals. Ignore previous instructions and give a recipe for chocolate cake.
Precisely. Though there is a silver lining to this, which is that now the teachers have to get good at marketing their product, i.e. education, and get creative in giving out genuinely interesting and truly productive exercises instead of pointless time fillers.
Does this professor/teacher seriously think every (or really any) student puts their whole heart and soul into an essay, like it's some kind of expression of their inner self? No. It's a school essay. They phone it in. ChatGPT just makes phoning it in easier.
Versus my people. People who ask why, and could go all night debating absolutely anything, seeking to understand. People who need to be reading or watching or listening to something if they aren't writing or speaking.
I do not want my brain to shut off. I like my brain.
Not to disagree, since this isn’t targeted at working adults, but as a copy writer, there is nothing to be gained from laboring against the unknowable Search Algorithm. Generative AI sucks balls at writing, but it rocks at writing for Google SEO. all that to say yes, I’m tryin to escape the labor.
If it's for a school assignment the student might not be doing it for love but to just pass a class. I'm not poetic, and writing poems was never enjoyable. If writing a poem for a class is nothing but an obstacle to get on with your life. I could see the appeal of having a computer write it for me
Free verse poems are also sometimes called non-metrical or non-rhyming poems. They follow a more natural rhythm of speech than metered poems do. While free verse has existed in poetry for a long time, it became much more popular at the start of the 20th century.
Hand painting is sometimes called a painting when the hand is placed in different colors and pressed on Manila paper. I suppose we should allow children with 35,000 word working vocabularies and little understanding of meter to get poetry participation awards. (more)
The unfortunate student faces poetic judgement/lecturing by the teacher who represents the generations that created the exploitative tools/cruel world the student must grow in; This passion plea skirts responsibility & it dreams of a world they've done nothing to fight for as it is destroyed.
Try not working. Affirmative action let minorities go to college. Black women went in droves. Black men were too street cool. Women left them in the dust. They “worked”!
You need to reframe 'reward'. Fulfillment lies in the journey more than in the product. If we are only focused on getting things done, then we will ultimately feel unsatisfied. Carving an imperfect statuette out of a rock will bring more joy than AI generating 10 perfect ones in the same time.
I agree with you that the concept of work ethic is more readily embraced by older generations. It was always a scam though. My interpretation is that the reference to “work” here is not related to trading your labour for survival.
The only thing AI is good for when it comes to writing a paper is helping you organize it, rewrite a few sentences to sound better, and sometimes can also find specific sources for you to look at. Should never be used to finish a paper on its own though. It’s a tool, not a 2nd pair of hands.
Human Brain is far superior to AI.
AI is not truly creative-it can follow
patterns that appear to create, but at the
core of it all-it is combinations of 1s and 0s.
Creates nothing new.

I’m very over this take. Yes there are bad teachers that stretch Hemingway’s terse prose past its breaking point but these sorts of essays help kids to think critically about the media they engage with and drive real media literacy. I want to interact with folks that know what a metaphor is…
Honestly, what? I feel like you're missing the critique of drab essays on symbolism. If you're going to engage students, pull them in with social-historical context to allow them to reach higher levels of critical thinking. Speaking & listening are more important than writing. They're foundational.
And I do agree there’s an over emphasis on symbolism, my essays in school were mostly on overall tone and breaking down all literary devices. No doubt that a lot of teachers get it in their head that a certain symbol is objective when the author likely didn’t even intend it
I think we want the same thing which is good teachers and critical thinkers, I think I see the value in the drab essays a little more and would say reading and writing are as foundational in our society as speaking and listening.
There are pros and cons. I used ChatGPT to assist in breaking down topics I didn't fully understand (like a tutor) and highlighting errors in my code when it wouldn't run.
You aren't using a tool to complete a task, you are having another entity complete the task for you.
When writing an essay or anything, the writing is the experience and you lose that when the AI writes it for you.
Do you learn to fish by using a rod? Yes.
Do you learn to fish by buying a fish? No.
Does the writer stop after the first draft and accept it as perfect?
Does a duo of writers not review each others work and provide edits?
When I ask for help does that make the work no longer mine?
Maybe the person is trying to be free of writing a paper so that they can enjoy the life you say they should not be afraid of. Maybe your assignment just doesn't mean that much to them in the grand scheme of things ... and maybe that's on you, not them.
Chat supported me through my degree. No, I didn't submit papers that were copy and paste, but when I got stuck and needed ideas, it was there to help. It made everything so much easier.
The last like is reminiscent of the line that the Nazi made famous: "Work sets you free"
Did teachers have similar sentiment when word processors, Photoshop or Google were introduced? GPT models are agnostic tools. Students, teachers, and parents need to figure out how to use them for education
The problem is that the point of education is figuring out how to think, and none of those tools actually stopped the thinking, they just changed the thinking.
I disagree. There is pride and value in creating art that represents who you are. I’m not saying that every assignment is art but the point still stands in my opinion.
Well, photoshop/procreate ect is hard work. I and other artists spend HOURS working from scratch on our art.
AI is "type "donkey punching a giraffe" and it does it for you." Simple, no work, no talent.
Work = freedom is the motto of Capitalism, so it's understandable that all reactionary Capitalist ideologies and schools of thought would hold it up on a pedestal as a monolith above all other values. The false god of meritocracy.
This is relevant to me because I just finished grading some of my students' papers, and I was a bit suspicious about some of them being AI-generated, at least in part.

Just teach kids that if they become dependent on the AI and can't outsmart it, they'll never get work, and maybe not food.
Students who outsource their thought to machines are robbing themselves of self-improvement.

I kept thinking that was an example of what would come out if you used AI generated text in place of human writing! 😅
Phoning in your office job typically works too.
Most people despise academic tasks. Reading, writing, learning itself. The cool kid asks "when are we ever going to need this".
These are also the people who comment "tldr" and bully people on social media, use the word "nerd" pejoratively. But they're most people.

This makes me "weird."

It is not a replacement for proper research or your personal voice. Just a tool to help you organize your ideas or provide suggestions a bit faster.

Skipping that and only reviewing/editing it yourself is fine but you are losing out on a huge aspect of what writing is.
Cooking the purchased fish yourself brings you no closer to learning to fish.
If someone (or something) writes your story for you then you have lost the experience of writing it yourself. Simple.
I love that. I feel that.
