Canada is ranked 1 in education, 3 in safety, 4 in justice, 4 in overall best country. We are not a broken country. We have not suffered a lost decade. Our existence is in the balance. Vote.

In a moment when institutions are capitulating to the administration over diversity and race— Im thinking of offering a condensed version of my short Columbia course on race, media and global history for this moment. Would y’all sign up?

😳 what's going on here 🤷‍♂️

There are 260 Democratic members in Congress. They should charter a few planes and all fly to El Salvador together. Go make good trouble!

Last night was the 250th anniversary of Paul Revere's midnight ride to warn the Minutemen of approaching British troops. I want to take a moment to share an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence's grievances against King George III. Remind you of anyone?

Anyone have any tips for a weekend trip to Barcelona? I‘ve been there before so I know about the main sights, just more restaurants, bars, cafés, bookshops, clothing stores etc. Hidden gems. LGBT stuff.

At Princeton University we are being clear about our continued commitment to diversity and nondiscrimination, in full compliance with law (as opposed to executive order) and consistent with our ethical responsibilities as educators for the entire nation. www.dailyprincetonian.com/article/2025...

The attempts to use the full force of the Federal government to censor science and scientists are escalating.

🤣🤣

“Institutions that stood up are remembered for standing up to that power & that coercion, they're remembered for their acts of bravery. Institutions that capitulated are remembered for their willingness to cave to autocratic demands.” — Risa Lieberwitz, president of the Cornell chapter of the AAUP

Disability is one of the few minority groups you can join at any time. People believe they will be the exception & have trouble accepting they’re likely to become disabled at some point in their lives. Work on internalized ableism. Engage in disability justice. It will benefit you in the long run

I said it early because I recognized the potential, #TeslaTakeDown pickets are what started to give regular people a way to take direct action after the inauguration. And those pickets have made a difference. If you can join the pickets in your area, you should.

I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance. I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return.

Dear senators who think you can’t do anything, Today, Senator Van Hollen - through diplomatic pressure - got a meeting with Abrego Garcia in El Salvador. So that thing you’re thinking about doing? DO IT. ~ All of Us

I don’t think we have done a good job explaining to the American public the value of functioning universities. The billions of dollars of government funding that top universities get are actually vetted competitive contracts that allow faculty to do scientific research.

“If a pact is formed, the universities shall “commit meaningful funding to a shared or distributed defense fund”. The fund will be in turn used to provide “immediate and strategic support to any member institution under direct political or legal infringement.” #defendhighered

This reorganization plan will devastate American biomedical science. Congress must exercise their appropriations power to prevent this outcome.

Before the election, I warned that there is no safe haven under authoritarianism. If they can ship Kilmar Abrego Garcia to a foreign prison—accused of no crime, with no trial—they can do it to anyone. Americans of conscience must stand against this now.

We are saying "No MOre!" to MO politicians who would try to use misleading language, red tape, and overturning the things we already voted for! Join our volunteer weekly call tonight to find out how you can help! RespectVoters.org/ProtectMO #RespectMOVoters #moleg

We called out Harvard in the past for inaction. So now we are happy to speak out with praise. This is a major step forward. It’s not just a lack of capitulation. It’s an aggressive effort leaning into public comms — exactly what is needed. Bravo to Harvard 👏

Coinciding with it's "No" letter Harvard has refashioned its university homepage into essentially an advertisement for the social benefits of university research. This is the current front page.

important context about the concentration camps in el salvador:

There’s risk in speaking up. But just as my patients need to see me as their doctor to standing up — so too do we clinicians need to see our institutions stand up for science, freedom of expression, and the diversity of our academic community. www.bostonglobe.com/2025/04/14/b...

This is terrifying in America. ICE agents are showing up masked—these abductions must stop. If you’re going to detain someone, show your face, present a warrant, and proper ID. Disappearing people from their families without evidence or accountability isn’t law enforcement—it’s state-sponsored fear.

April is Alcohol Awareness Month

RFK Jr. says he’ll know what causes autism by September. Someone should tell him NIH—his own department—already funds $300 million per year in autism research, yielding hundreds of studies. Autism has been studied for decades and he’s claiming he will know the cause in 4 months?

Ambassador Spock modeling the proper “fuck you, make me” response to intimidation tactics. Our current-day institutions could learn a lot from him.

For 75 years, every time any U.S. state has requested epidemiologic assistance (an “Epi-Aid”), CDC sent disease detectives. Now, Wisconsin has asked for help to address newly discovered lead poisoning in Milwaukee. But all CDC experts in lead poisoning were just fired.

This National Public Health Week, I encourage fellow journalists to refer to the Covid-19 pandemic in the present tense. Sure, the government emergency in the US is over, but that means people can be forced to come into work while sick with Covid, which increases the risk of developing Long Covid.

Great news: NIH postbac program is recruiting again! If your grad school plans were affected by program cutbacks or admissions freezes this year I highly encourage you to apply, this could be a perfect opportunity. Please repost. www.training.nih.gov/research-tra...

Yes, thanks to @aaup.bsky.social and others!

They’re destroying federal science capacity & California needs to step up & expand science capacity at the state level. I introduced SB 829 to create the California Institute for Scientific Research & authorize the State of California to produce vaccines. It just passed the Senate Health Committee.
