Hello. I live in Los Angeles. The president is lying.

Top 4 stories in The New York Times climate newsletter, all 4...🙈🙉🙊 3 are about Trump going full-on against economics, not just climate. The 4th? Just plain ol' corruption by some rich guy who thinks the normal rules don't apply to him.

Before heading home today, I decided to check out Kellogg Mall Park in St Paul which is across from hotel & caught my eye. Was built in 1920s, fell into disrepair, and then in 1980s new sculptural installation put in. As an #envhist scholar, the narration of the park was striking. A thread…

The difference between "law and order" and public safety.

“A 2010 study that analyzed 40 years of protest coverage in five major newspapers, including The New York Times and The Washington Post, found that the papers depicted protests — even peaceful ones — as nuisances rather than as necessary functions of democracy.”

The past few months have been the perverted reflection of 1965 -dismantling of Civil Rights Act, Voting Rights Act, Great Society -Natl Guard activated against will of governor for 1st time since LBJ sent them to AL to *protect* protestors messaging-custom-newsletters.nytimes.com/dynamic/rend...

These govt employees are not in an undercover operation, not in a covert operation. Their role is clear. But their individual identities are not. Recipe for impunity. No transparency. No accountability. www.foxla.com/news/paramou...

State repression of peaceful protests can subject activists to injury and even death but—when broadcast to the world through media—often turns mass opinion against the state. bsky.app/profile/owas...

There are two pathways to what Trump is doing: 1) He is federalizing 2000 National Guard troops; or 2) He is deploying 2000 members of another state’s National Guard with the permission of *that* state’s governor. These posts walk through the relevant authorities—and the questions they raise:

Re-upping this “One First” post from April asking—and trying to answer—five questions about the domestic use of the military:

#ArtistFave15 #MusicChallenge Day 8: “Isabella County, 1992,” Great Lakes Myth Society (2005) This I think is my favorite of all these songs. A tavern-ready, stein-swinging ballad about leaving “a dreary hometown” and making a new life “in a town where the drinkers are plowed like the roads.”

Amazing article. USAF officers were told we had alien tech as a possible hazing ritual–many believed it for the rest of their careers. And the story of UFOs disabling nuclear missiles? Secret EMP test. www.wsj.com/politics/nat...

An examination by The Associated Press found that the rules EPA wants to eliminate are projected to save more than 30,000 lives and $275 billion every year.

What I mean when I say NO KINGS: “The grid operators that draw power from the plants said they never asked for them to remain open, and consumers may have to absorb extra costs.” Gift link: Coal and Gas Plants Were Closing. Then Trump Ordered Them to Keep Running. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/06/c...

Check out this really clear piece from @narayansub.bsky.social on a part of our industrial strategy that really was working. And that the current admin is walking away from. Which will make us poorer and will just entrench the global leadership of China. Shame. foreignpolicy.com/2025/06/05/e...

The Campbell coal plant, featured in the picture below, is near my home in Ottawa County, Michigan. The utility planned to shutter it at the end of May. Ratepayers like me will be on the hook for keeping it open.

Dumb. Dumb. Dumb. And who pays the bills for this stupidity? Ordinary Americans, many of whom are already struggling. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/06/c...

Composer weaves climate crisis themes into new choral work - ‘Missa Laudato Si’’ incorporates the late Pope Francis’s Laudato Si’ encyclical and other environmental texts in a musical reflection on climate change. yaleclimateconnectio... and youtu.be/G45a99yZhkM...

🚨 New Paper! Led by PhD alum Dr. Marissa Webber & co-authored by undergrad alum Lillian Mei, we looked at how Nature-Based Solutions can help increase climate resilience for infrastructure near rivers, & we talked with State DOT leaders about the barriers for deployment. doi.org/10.1038/s429...

NEW A little-noticed provision in the Senate budget bill would gut the government’s long-running CAFE fuel economy program for cars & light trucks. The provision sets all penalties for automakers who run afoul of the rules to zero — essentially repealing the law. heatmap.news/politics/cor...

The U.S. Department of State has been exercising a last-minute veto of applications to the prestigious Fulbright program on ideological grounds — often rejecting grants funded in part, or largely, by foreign countries, not the U.S. chroni.cl/3FrqPLr

No joke, Trump has to fire all of them now. They're a sabotage risk to the administration.

NEW: A federal court temporarily blocked an Oklahoma law barring many immigrants from entering or living in the state. The law threatened the arrest of even those pursuing legal immigration status, in spite of federal law.

Maybe we shouldn't get into a situation where one guy can threaten the entire U.S. space program because the president wrote a mean tweet about him. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

It's #WorldEnvironmentDay! This year calls for collective action to tackle plastic pollution. Millions of tonnes of plastic harm our oceans, rivers and wildlife. Reducing plastic waste is vital. Check out how the EU is tackling plastic pollution. 👇 europa.eu/!vJ8pRC #EndPlasticPollution

YIMBY here. I want abundance of good things and scarcity of bad things. Both, at the same time. I think a center+right alliance on deregulation runs a significant risk of being co-opted to accelerate buildout of both good and bad stuff, which could easily have net-neutral or net-negative results.

Oh, no! Ex-UM president’s bid for Florida job backfires www.detroitnews.com/story/news/l...

Another dumb gross irony here is Harvey Milk served in the Navy and Donald Trump's Navy secretary didn't www.military.com/daily-news/2...

Cuts have consequences, illustrated. As seen on TV 📺

By 2000, only a few dozen lake sturgeon were still spawning in Michigan’s Big Manistee River. The Little River Band of Ottawa Indians wanted to help, but to help the fish, the Tribe would have to devise an entirely new way of raising nmé. www.greatlakesnow.org/2025/06/how-...

Just to add, this analysis focuses on effects related to Medicaid/ACA Marketplace coverage and nonenforcement of the CMS minimum staffing rule. The House bill also repeals two different vehicle emissions standards, which would result in tens of thousands more additional premature deaths.

This is great! And yes we should f***ing swear more about how we are still neither reducing global emissions to meet agreed targets nor adapting to increasing extreme weather already now happening

US climate scientists need all the help they can get. Including from foul-mouthed comedians! 🤡😱😱 Watch Emmy Award-Winning David Cross team up with Prof Michael Oppenheimer in the US launch of the hit series "Climate Science Translated". #climate #arresteddevelopment #climatescience

Trump's invocation of the Alien Enemies Act did not have a lawful basis. Pleased that Cato and Brennan could work together on this important brief with the help of @ilyasomin.bsky.social.

A lot of folks are #abundance posting, so now is as good a time as any to share an anecdote that revealed to me one of the big flaws in the "Abundance" worldview. Full disclosure, I'm 1/3 of the way through the actual book.

We have a hurricane season because warm water is hurricane food. As global temperatures increase, the season gets longer and the risk of stronger hurricanes grows. I am happy to explain this to any senior government officials

Trump’s head of FEMA told staffers he was’t aware that the US has a hurricane season. It started on Sunday. So, you know, Joni Ernst was right. www.reuters.com/world/us/fem...

Probably the most influential book I read on my adult career was Remix by Lessig. It is horrifying that LLMs and genAI is the remix culture we get because only oligopolies can legally reuse copyrighted works...including now, apparently, everyone else's copyrighted works, too.
