I was severely sleep deprived yesterday, so I worked on one of my websites and started converting my ad-hoc scripts into a real python tool. (Reinforces my belief that I need less focus and headspace to work on tech than creativity.)

Handwritten notes on pdfs take a lot of disk. I had to split my wip into chunks to avoid Github's 100mb limit.

I blogged about my February in Writing, where I: - finished my third draft, - began reading the book in chapter order for the first time, and - did a lot of research on developmental editing services. escapewindow.com/blog/2025-02... #AmWriting #AmWritingFantasy #AmEditing #WritingCommunity

Pushed hard to finish the initial 3rd draft pass yesterday, and today I'm drained. I think I'll work on technical things today: document conversion and formatting, website work.

Finished the initial rough 3rd draft pass of the 2nd POV. 18 more scenes to go. I want to fix a number of issues and polish before I declare the 3rd draft done, but if I hit a scene per day, I'll have all of March for that. #AmWriting #AmWritingFantasy #AmEditing #WritingCommunity

Happy U.S. release day to the Dragonlance Chronicles 40th Anniversary Edition omnibus! #Dragonlance

I published my January in Writing blog post, in which I introduce you to our new puppy, Maple. escapewindow.com/blog/2025-01... #DogsOfBluesky #AmWriting #AmWritingFantasy #AmEditing #WritingCommunity

Installed Arch+Hyprland on my ancient Macbook Air 11". Trying to convince myself this is saving old hardware and will be a productivity boost, not a huge distraction. We'll see.

1/ A skilled pickpocket is an artist, of an invisible sort. They do what they do right in front of you, before your eyes, but they have the knack to distract your brain so it sees nothing, the wrong thing, that ridiculous tail someone stuck on her ass. They can also work backwards. A put-pocket can

“That’s when they suspended the constitution. They said it would be temporary. There wasn’t any rioting in the streets. People stayed home, watching their televisions, looking for direction. There wasn’t even an enemy you could put a finger on.” —Margaret Atwood, Handmaids Tale

I've been struggling a bit with self-doubt in my writing: My structure is good, but my prose is weak compared to published writers. #AmWriting #AmEditing #WritingCommunity #EpicFantasy 1/2

You are likely going to have trouble writing as the news keeps rolling in. I have a free class for you about how to navigate wanting to write in the face of all of this bullshit.

Pertinent to my interests.

‪All five e-books of my (finished) Heroes of Spira epic fantasy series are on S A L E ($£0.99) all this week! "One of the most original epic fantasy journeys I have ever read…adventure on a grand scale with an unforgettable group of characters." – author Dyrk Ashton www.amazon.com/dp/B077LBHV92

BREATH OF THE DRAGON debuts on the USA TODAY bestseller list!!! 🔥 So thankful to the whole team at Wednesday Books for giving this book a strong launch!

Unsolicited writing advice, no #284785: Don't obsess over being original. We're all part of the same river. Originality just means that other people don't know which part of the river you drank from.

"Querying is so easy and fun!" —said no author ever While I can't make the process totally painless, here are 7 insider querying hacks that will be huge time- & sanity-savers: 🧵

I'm going to haul this one out again, about why it's not a great idea to idolize creative people, or indeed anyone, and certainly not me, because today really is the day to be reminded about that, isn't it: whatever.scalzi.com/2024/08/15/p...

Dems are still operating in a political paradigm where the public has a set of concerns, roughly reflecting the reality of life in America, and elections are about who addresses them better. But that is not the political paradigm we’ve lived in, for a long time, and we’re getting further from it.

Writing tip: After you finish, go back & cut all the adverbs. Then all the adjectives. Then all the other words. Eat the paper. Now you're free.

Been getting a lot of people asking about LA geography concerned that the images they see means the entire county is on fire. That's understandable. But LA is a big place. So, to give an idea of scale it's time to cart this out again. It's a map of LA with other cities superimposed on it.

These extraordinary photos of the LA fires have been shared widely on social media, often without crediting the photographer. These are all the work of Ethan Swope, an LA-based photojournalist working for AP. You can follow his remarkable reporting here👇 www.instagram.com/ethanswopeph...

the two things I believe most strongly in this world are that public services should be wholly replaced by the private sector and that the government should intervene instantly the second I personally feel a little bit scared

All, the Pasadena Humane Society is asking for donations - they're taking in animals right now, and are also preparing to evacuate if needed. Please consider helping:

How to write: Stop not writing. Keep your butt in the chair. Write really bad small sections of the whole—passages, moments, episodes, memories—til you have an incredibly shitty 1st draft. Then take out the boring parts, the lies and pretensions. Then write a better 2nd draft.

Writing Tip: Editing is a journey of rediscovering what you wrote and finding flaws in it. That can demoralize even the best of writers. Don't let it! Those flaws are not an indication of failure. Finding and fixing them is an indication of growth and progress. #writing #writingtips #writesky

I think it’s time to bring my most viral tweet over from the bad place.

THREAD: In 2023, I received an envelope with no return address. Inside was a flash drive containing tens of 1000s of secret files. It came from a vigilante with a tumultuous past, who'd conducted a years-long undercover operation. He didn’t tell the FBI or his family. He only told me.

Folks: please be diligent about not disseminating Ann Telnaes' cartoon in a way that she's not getting the clicks on it (until she says differently). Her IP matters now more than ever. Make it go viral but make sure she benefits. anntelnaes.substack.com/p/why-im-qui...

Who loves a good lighthouse? I sure do. I don't photograph structures that much but I make an exception for lighthouses. This beauty can be found at St. Marks, in the Florida Panhandle. It is an infrared image at 720nm. #photography #landscapephotography #ir #infrared #EastCoastKin #lighthouse

Just write the thing. Fuck the haters and that doubt inside you. You will regret never even trying.

How about ynstead of pouringe a ton of moneye ynto A.I. we just funde public educacioun and use the bookes we alreadye have that it ys being trained upon?

I was about to resign myself to #selfpublishing, since I can't seem to work my way down to 120k words for my dark epic fantasy. But James Long of @orbitbooks.bsky.social says Epic Fantasy debuts should be between 125k - 175k. #AmWritingFantasy #EpicFantasy #WritingCommunity

The most effective editing move is still the one I stole from George Saunders: read your draft over and over and over again, out loud, until you have to fix the bad parts because you will literally die if you have to read them more time

True luxury is found in the simplest moments.

Writing tip: Write words in the order you intend them to be read, not in alphabetical order. 21st century readers don't have the attention span to assemble a story from its alphabetized words. These are no longer the days of Dick Moby, Heights Wuthering, and And Peace War.

If you stopped at a deserted rest area to use the restroom and found it filled with turtles who all silently, balefully, turned their heads to look at you, how many turtles would it take to scare you off? That number is your Uncanny Rest-Area Restroom Turtle Number.

More to say on burnout and I'm probably going to boost it a few times because folks need to hear it: Burnout is a form of brain damage. It happens when stress conditions persist until they damage our brains. It's an injury that needs to heal, not a weakness that needs to be pushed through.
