An odd one to find indoors… a crabronid wasp of some kind, maybe an Ectemnius, but wasp identification is hard. Crabronids are solitary wasps which have these chunky heads which look like they have swollen eyes, and some use their strong mandibles to tunnel into soft wood to build their nests.

Baby blackbird went clonk into the kitchen window. It was a bit stunned and may have an injured wing. I helped it back up onto its feet and it jumped into the flowerbed. There’s a grumpy adult male flying around who is hopefully the father and will look after it, but I’m not super optimistic 😔

I remember being in a densely packed French market a few years back, and they had a group of soldiers in the crowd, nominally providing security. If they actually had to use their rifles, I couldn’t see how’d they’d avoid killing a whole bunch of people by accident. It did not make me feel safe.
