I wrote a piece for @sciam.bsky.social about why White parents should be talking to their kids about race and racism. It was so great to work with @megha.bsky.social on this piece! Please share! www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-...

📣 DEAR COLLEAGUE LETTERS ARE NON-BINDING GUIDANCE LETTERS. You cannot change what is considered illegal discrimination under federal law through non binding guidance.

Are you a Southeast Asian social-personality psychologist attending #SPSP2025 in Denver? We are getting together on Thursday 2/20, 7pm local time at Hyatt Regency’s Assembly Hall Bar! RSVP on the Whova app in the meetup section (or just come through)! SEASAPP is back for our 5th year reunion!!

1/8. This week I had a few different conversations with scholars who, in the face of the attacks on science and institutions of learning in the U.S., are wondering what to do. One suggestion I have is: keep doing your work. It matters in and of itself. Why do I say that? A few reasons.

The Trump Administration's list of censored scientific terms that get NSF grant proposals flagged contains "women” and “female”, but no mention of “men” or “male.” There is “black” and “indigenous” on this list, but no “white.” The only identity not censored is mine. youtu.be/dHXbpj1Z3UU

The almost explicit position of these groups is that anything more than a token number of black and Hispanic students in an elite institution is de facto evidence of anti-white racial discrimination.

Exactly this. It's really gross to see people arguing that their research will be "unfairly" flagged/catch strays. It sets a scary precedent where people start pointing fingers and suggesting that "those people" are the problem, but not them. Quite chilling.

NEW: We obtained the directions NSF program officers are following to review all grants for compliance with the Trump EOs and the turmoil it has created in an agency mandated to broaden STEM participation. Our story: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

If true, they're going to try to de-fund scientists for being "systematic." Cuz, of course.

On top of 5000 problems here: FEMALE AND WOMEN IS ON THE LIST BUT MALE AND MEN ARE NOT. JUST AN FYI.

🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

13 state Attorneys General put out a joint statement this week vigorously defending DEIA programs and calling the EOs offensive, discriminatory, and illegal. They're Democrats. Some Dems absolutely need their spines stiffened. But some are actually fighting too www.atg.wa.gov/news/news-re...

One (of many) very real and immediate impact is that postdocs will not get paid, right now, for the month of Feb. That is money that these scholars need to live (pay rent, buy food etc.). www.science.org/content/arti...

To expand on this, right now ~200 postdoc fellows directly funded by NSF are locked out of their salary &research funds right before the first of the month. No doubt other NSF funded grads &postdocs are affected as well. All requests for funds put in before the freeze are slowly being cancelled

National Science Foundation freezes grant review in response to Trump executive orders : Shots - Health News : NPR 🚨This is extremely bad 🚨

NEW — OMB temporarily pauses all agency grants and loans programs. Per copy of memo: "The use of Federal resources to advance Marxist equity, transgenderism, and green new deal social engineering policies is a waste of taxpayer dollars that does not improve the day-to-day lives of those we serve."

Local journalists, doing the work. #Boulder

CU Boulder must pay 386 women faculty back pay for gender discrimination.

A storm 🌪️ is coming to academia, and just describing it won’t be enough. We’re supposed to be protecting knowledge and diversity. What organizes us academics across institutions? Who are our lawyers? Who will fund our side? Here are some resources we have now (but we need MORE ideas and BIGGER):
