These processes can render the needs of those with multiply marginalized identities invisible. Thus, it is critical to consider how different ally actions impact all members of a group and ways to support multiply marginalized individuals. 5/5

When discussing “all-inclusivity,” we emphasize the need to act as an ally for all members of a group. From research and theorizing on intersectionality, we know it might be easiest to act as an ally for individuals who are singularly marginalized and represent the “typical” group members. 4/5

We agree with those who conceptualize allyship as a constantly evolving process – that is, you cannot just “become an ally” and be done. In “Box 2”, we discuss how to apply this framework, acknowledging the diverse experiences of marginalized individuals across different situations. 3/5

We highlight four crucial components for acting as an effective ally – awareness, authentic motivation, action orientation, and all-inclusivity.
