Hi Gail! I’ve been talking this one up a bunch - Devin is a friend and a hell of a writer - but since you expressed interest, I wanted to make sure you knew that the campaign is live! And if you already knew that, please disregard, and I hope you have a lovely weekend.

This always makes me think of a line from Alan Shore in Boston Legal, as he suggests a hefty bribe: “it’s highly possible I’m kidding, by the way, depending upon your reaction.”

I could be mistaken, but I believe its purpose was to express Steve’s affinity for the short from which the image was take.

The message - love who you love, love how you love, tell them, cherish them, for as long as you can. Don’t let hate win. And happy Valentine’s Day to everyone, especially to anyone who read this far.

So, I responded as well as I can. I don’t want to lose my best friend, but I’m afraid he may already be lost. I know a lot of people are facing a lot worse fallout from the current environment, and I can’t just sit silently while that happens - even at the cost of old friendships.

He immediately responded, though I couldn’t bring myself to read it for a couple days - until today. I doubt he would ever explicitly describe the “worldview” he’s talking about, but I’m afraid I already know what that is.

I didn’t respond. I couldn’t. A couple days passed and he asked if we were ok. I’ve known this man since we were 12, I couldn’t just ignore him and leave him hanging. So I responded with this:

Of course, he was the lost subscription, which he told me was because the things I wrote made it clear we had different world views and he thought it was “better for our friendship” if he didn’t continue to follow my work. And then he acted as if everything was totally normal.

A few weeks later, I spoke to my oldest and closest friend (via text). We’ve never seen eye to eye on everything but I’ve never doubted his general good nature, and his desire to be and do good.

Even though I don’t have HUGE reach, I felt it was the very least I could do - to publicly state where I stand on this for anyone who would care to listen. And since my newsletter doesn’t have too many subscribers, I noticed when one dropped off, though not who. Oh well.

…to paraphrase, screw Nazis and stand up for vulnerable people, especially trans people (and you should especially do this if you have the privilege of a middle-aged cis/het white guy, as I do).
