It's so hard out there right now, especially for early career scientists. Publishing expectations have never been higher, and it's taking a year or more for papers to go through peer review, largely because of these delays. I know things are hard, but if you're publishing, you should be reviewing.

Partly artistic reasons: the artists who were with us wanted to make larger sculptural interventions in the environment as we went. But also partly scientific: by grinding samples that are too big to ship home, we can make better and bigger observations in the field, I think.

Yes! Using an angle-grinder with cutting and polishing attachments, we could prepare a whole block in any way we chose in the field.
