For folks asking if I'm going to attend Trump's joint address to Congress next week: no. Instead, I'm choosing to hear directly from Oregonians and will be hosting an open-to-all town hall on Facebook live. Oregonians can submit questions in advance here:

Shame on Trump and Vance.

Rubio terminated 5800 USAID contracts – more than 90% of its foreign aid programs – in defiance of the courts. Here’s a list of just some of the lifesaving awards that were terminated. Nearly all were Congressionally mandated. They’ve saved millions of lives. 🧵

Those helicopters that Trump bullied 🇨🇦 into getting? They have already proven useful. Nope, no fentanyl, they just saved 5 poor people who were fleeing FROM 🇺🇸 ==>🇨🇦 in the middle of winter... globalnews.ca/news/1104043...

Surreal read of the day: a paper using USAID-funded and now terminated Demographic & Health Surveys to count the huge number of lives saved by the now frozen US PEPFAR program to fight HIV, co-authored by current US admin’s nominee to lead cuts in health research jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

Very much enjoyed "The Brutalist" at the movie theater last evening. Highly recommend it.

holy hell this is smart

Works as advertised

It renders us as a society vulnerable to misinformation and manipulation and incapable of rational conversation.

Good posts by @jrothst.bsky.social and @marthagimbel.bsky.social My guess: the short-run negative impact of trade disruptions and general uncertainty >those of gutting the federal workforce. Would you invest now into your automotive supply chain in North America? Long-run, none of this bodes well.

Happy #JobsDay! At 8:30 am ET, BLS delivers the most-important signals abt how economy is changing. Forecasts’ center: +169K jobs Unemployment rate (UR) stable at 4.1% Lots of complexity today, so I'm posting this earlier-than-usual with a longer-than-usual preamble.

Here is the White House’s own justification for its sudden evisceration of the entire foreign aid agency worldwide, in secret on a Saturday night. It’s a quickie list of a few ragebait links to sites like Breitbart. They concern minuscule sums of money that could be addressed with trivial reforms.

Glad we got through the tariff emergency (at least the first wave of it....). Also glad that people are bringing creativity, energy, and determination to figuring out a medium and long-run response. But I want to throw cold water on three ideas I've seen floated. I'll explain...

I signed, have you?

So the emerging division of labor is that Trump muses about randomly starting political or economic conflict around the world for a few days at a time, while Musk systematically and illegally destroys the US federal government. Do I have it right?

Bumping this with the hope that a senator might see it

WTF wapo.st/4hFz4Rm

I have been following along what the new administration is doing on the Tariff side. Not enough bandwidth to also to follow the privacy/data developments. Could somebody point me to a good, calm (if possible) summary of what happened there?

I would rephrase that to: if the Canadian federal and provincial governments ... but else I agree.

American science and medicine has been thrown into chaos and uncertainty over the past week. Here are some stories to get up to speed. 1/12

Somewhat odd comment re: Tesla in this thread @sdullien.bsky.social's argument is: much of the US car industry has long supply-chains reaching into Canada and Mexico, Tesla does not. So, it might benefit Tesla. To me this says that the inmates have taken over the insane asylum.

Raising the price of driving reduces driving. NYC's congestion pricing is clearly another W for economic theory. (Many such cases.) But is it a good policy? After all, less driving isn’t the goal. I walk through how to think about the costs & benefits www.economicforces.xyz/p/congestion...

Not sure I would continue to consider the US a safe and reliable debtor at the rate things are going.

The more Bluesky will grow, the more bad actors of various kind will come Bluesky isn’t a "magic place" that is inherently good and peaceful It can be pleasant providing we collectively adopt norms that make it so One of these norms is for large accounts to block generously 1/3 #SocialWeb

McGill is late to the market, but we finally can post our position. We are looking across all fields. McGill econ is a fun department with an active, lively group of colleagues. Apply (or repost).

Has anyone put together a comprehensive list of placement officers across Econ Departments, with emails? Maybe using AI? ChatGPT didn’t help much. Would be a great public good #EconSky

@arindube24.bsky.social very clearly is not Arin Dube. Just saying.
