It’s a really weird/random number to use that way.
Also, please don’t refer to yourself as old—it stresses me out! :-)

I sometimes wonder how many spam emails intended for me end up in the inbox of the person with [email protected].

Oh, I misinterpreted what you wrote. My bad!

Sadly, I suspect that’s totally true, though.

Always asking me questions about myself. Always remembering the little details I mention in passing. Always bringing up when we’ll see each other again. Yeah.

This guy?

It’s satire, yeah. The guy says so in a comment. Not stopping hundreds of people from sharing it as if it’s real, though!

God, so refreshing to see at least one other person read the article before commenting on it.

“Such fixations are a long American tradition, and they are cresting again now at a key moment in history—at the consummation between Silicon Valley capitalism and right-wing political power.”

Okay, the title is ironic, and it’s in fact an excellent article problematizing IQ and looking at the resurgence of IQ discourse in Silicon Valley, etc.

It’s not by Maggie Haberman.

“If you don’t use ‘hegemony’ and ‘parsimonious’ in text messages with your friends, then why would you use it in an essay to college? That’s not you,” O’Hara said.
Um, you think I should write a formal essay using the same vocabulary I use in text messages with friends?

“But using it for brainstorming and checking for mistakes is fine.”
Please, no. Coming up with ideas is part of the intellectual work of writing. Don’t offload that to a large language model.

“On accident” isn’t an eggcorn. It’s just a less common version of “by accident” that probably has its origins as a parallel to “on purpose.” It would be really prescriptivist to even call it an error.

You’re arguing with a guy who doesn’t know how to pronounce Wednesday.

Horrifying thought, but I wonder what percentage of Wikipedia already is ChatGPT—and how bad it will be a couple of years from now.

Didn’t think I’d get so many great ideas for how to make better buttered pasta for my kids in this thread!
comment in response to

That’s exactly how I make it for my toddlers: pasta, butter, parmesan, black pepper. Sometimes a tiny drizzle of olive oil, but I don’t want to go too far—they don’t have very refined palates yet.

I think you’re already on the right track—Crying of Lot 49 is the best place to start, IMO.

It doesn’t look even remotely real.
Look, I’m a Democrat, but can we take a break from swooning over growing user counts to acknowledge how much content on this platform is pure shit?

Yeah. This definitely isn’t by Mark Twain.
