I do think folks really haven't thought all that hard about what happens if you suck $1tn of payments out of the economy, have a trade war with all your allies at the same time, and force Europe to massively redirect consumer spending to defense spending all at the same time

FWIW, I think that it may well be exposure to other views which has increased polarisation. In the olden days, a Guardian reader wouldn't have had a clue what was in the Mail. And vice versa. Social media has increased exposure to different views. And very often, people react in outrage to them.
