Elke MacKenzie was one of the great lichen researchers of her time. Yet all of her papers bear the male identity that society forced her to maintain for much too long.

Wonderfully readable information written by @geoffrey311.bsky.social in the alternate texts for these photos. Great writing.

Using the fantastic Woodland Trust online Ancient Tree Inventory to work out where to look for lichens reliant on ancient/ veteran trees. ati.woodlandtrust.org.uk/tree-search/...

A gorgeous but unusual photo of Polycauliona polycarpa. The lobes are very typical, it's just there aren't normally this many of them! In most thalli the apothecia totally obscure the relatively small number of lobes. Was this on slate @mothman60.bsky.social ?

A new mushroom microscopy video just came out - this goes into detail on how to prepare microscope slides and find various taxonomically significant features such as spores, cheilocystidia, pleurocystidia, pileipellis and more. youtube.com/watch?v=vMY2... #fungifriends #fungi #microscopy

Beautiful prose written about a unique landscape.

In the underhangs below the stones of a north facing mortared wall the malachite green thalli of Botryolepraria lesdainii grow with the fern Wall Rue and spiders’ webs. Algal cells group in grape like clusters among septate hyphae with characteristic wide lumina #lichensBLS

I think I need to buy another book!

The slightly overhanging rock faces along the Vat Burn at Muir of Dinnet NNR are host to some characteristic lichen and moss species that I have not (or hardly ever) found further down Deeside. #scottishlichens #lichens #biodiveristy #scottishbryophytes #nature #geology

Parmelia sulcata, Melanelixia glabratula, Phaeophyscia orbicularis, and Physcia aipolia. All from Wierzenica, Wielkopolska. All of them are common species, but common doesn't mean inconsequential. #lichens #porosty #fungi #grzyby #lichenology #mycology #lichenfriends

Don't miss this subsidised learning opportunity. If your lichen journey is ready to develop 'from beginner to early intermediate level, grab this opportunity while you can! You won't regret it.

As long as it’s safe, take a look at your local dying ash tree. You may find the script lichen Pseudoschismatomma (Opegrapha) rufescens on the trunk. It seems to have taken advantage of ash dieback to increase its range/ abundance.

It's always interesting to see different people's everyday techniques. I hold tiny samples still with pva glue but that's not water soluble so I cope with non-light-transparent pieces of glue on my temporary slides. I can make very thin sections that way successfully.

Such fun to explore lichens with friends I've only previously met on Zoom.

Fascinating sounding talk on the lichens and mosses of archaeological and historical monuments coming up on 16th Jan from @scotwildlife.bsky.social! scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/our-events/a...

Some of the fungi and oomycetes that infect Devil's Bit Scabious - keep a look out next year! #FungiFriends #PlantPathogens

Great to see these pathogens brought together. I often spot the Peronospora by the extra long leaf stalks and narrow, curled leaves that it causes. Infected leaves are usually a yellowed shade of green. Thanks @bitheolaidhe.bsky.social

Wish I'd seen this in time for 1st January! Good luck to everyone who's taken up the challenge. I once did two plant disease records a day for 40 days. Challenging but fun.

In this new paper, Chris Preston reports results from a monthly recording of vascular plants in flower in the street flora of Cambridge. This could provide some useful seasonal context for the @bsbibotany.bsky.social #NewYearPlantHunt? www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1... @bsbiscience.bsky.social
