We need a LOT more of this energy. THANK YOU, Senator Smith!

Ackshually... "remotely competent" historians recognize how much of progress and "major events" (e.g. abolishment of slavery, civil rights, women's voting & reproductive rights) are the result of ordinary people organizing and relentlessly demanding their governments to form a more perfect union.

Prior to the budget showdown, Dems have an opportunity to show not tell what they're for by introducing a billionaires' tax and setting out bright red lines for their votes. #NoBillionaireBailouts Seize moral high ground, make MAGA defend the indefensible.

Live from my childhood home in Charlottesville, I’ve just shared my 213th #ScholarSunday thread of great public scholarly writing & work, podcast episodes, new & forthcoming books from the past week. Share widely & enjoy, all! 🗃️ americanstudier.substack.com/p/scholarsun...

If you have to send out "tell me what you did last week or I'll fire you" emails, well, I'm afraid you're not a very good executive.

They have the votes to impeach and convict him So they are not helpless They are complicit

If you want to run for local office, @runforsomething.net is here to help you. Look up what office you can run for at runforwhat.net -- our next intro call is Tuesday night.

Help me podcast? Next Monday will be episode 195 of Unsung History & the 195th straight week I've posted an episode. I need a break, but I don't know how to do breaks. Should I take a month off after episode 200 & then start "season 2"? Should I switch to every other week? Something else?

Memo to Democrats: If EVERY ONE of you would do what Janet Mills did yesterday EVERY TIME, Trump would unravel entirely. He relies on you being bullied. Refuse to be.

Happy George Washington’s Birthday!

I understand the value of weekday protests, but most of us who have the privilege of being able to protest work weekdays. We need regular weekend protests too.

Donald Trump’s firing of military leaders — four-star General Brown and four-star Admiral Franchetti — along with top legal officers is a betrayal of legions of first rate service members who dedicate their lives to our nation’s defense. This is a growing national security risk.

I promise you that whatever portion of the population thinks this is cool, we outnumber them by a lot. This is going to all come crashing down. I am appalled at the pain and suffering that is being caused along the way, but we will prevail as long as we don't give in to despair and keep fighting.

We need to be in the streets this weekend in massive numbers.

We fought a war last time a mad king tried to rule us.

If Hochul is scoring on him, it’s open season. Have at it, Dems.

A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

At this point it might be quicker to list the actions Trump has taken as president that *aren't* impeachable offenses.

For 150 years, all over the country, Black Americans have paid disproportionately higher property taxes while receiving far fewer public services, but due to a Depression-Era law, they've been unable to seek redress against discriminatory property tax assessments via SCOTUS. Only a handful of the pieces, podcasts, publications in my latest #ScholarSunday thread deal with the current mis-administration. But I can think of no better way to celebrate Not My President's Day, along with protests & much else, than to share great public scholarship. @hcrichardson.bsky.social 🗃️

Every time I pull up the Library of Congress National Jukebox I live in fear that it won't be there.

I just did a last listen of my Unsung History episode for tomorrow to make sure I got all of the editing right, and I'm now once again really mad at the injustice of American history. In addition to being livid at the injustice of American present.

People who voted Trump who are feeling pissed off right now about broken promises are an organizing opportunity, not a gloating opportunity

Yet again it's a good week for my mental health (but definitely not for the world) when I do better on Flashback than on the weekly news quiz. Flashback for February 15, 2025 28 points 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

If the legitimate press just permanently stopped attending these events and were replaced by propaganda outlets, that would be both optically clarifying and improve actual journalism.

This is true, but to be fair, this tactic is hardly a new one. Reagan pulled this decades ago, and it wasn't new then either.

If the government is cutting all of these positions to save money, where is the money going? Because they're damn sure not going to send it back to the American people or use it to subsidize the cost of eggs.

So if we did like a TikTok channel where people read the Constitution aloud would people watch? Because it's pretty clear that very few people in this country, especially the people in the White House and Congress, have any idea what's in there (or are willfully pretending they have no idea).

The richest man in the world, who has not been elected nor Senate-confirmed and who has no particular reason to hold loyalty to the US, is destroying our government and economy in the name of "efficiency." So the question is, is Musk an idiot, a selfish asshole, a foreign agent, or all three?

It might be Super Bowl Sunday later, but right now it’s #ScholarSunday–so here’s my 211st thread of great public scholarly writing & work, podcast episodes, new & forthcoming books from the last week. Please share widely & enjoy, team! 🗃️ americanstudier.substack.com/p/scholarsun...

Thanks, as always, to my wonderful mother, the full transcript for this week's episode of Unsung History, with guest @mikealbertus.bsky.social, is now up on the website.

Based on my podcast stats, the willful destruction of our democracy is driving more people to want to study the history of our country, so silver linings?
