'the dark mirror' by samantha shannon!! it's the 5th book in the bone season series ☺️ I 100% recommend it if you like modern fantasy, it's one of the most well-researched and clever series I've ever read

like hoyo is hardly subtle with these things and it's VERY obvious who their gnshin favs are—but there's a level of development and care and genuine fondness for these characters there (and with jhj, I'd argue) that I'm just not feeling here. it feels very targeted and cheap to me.

it worked in sumeru (haikvh) and fontaine (neuvithsly) bc they actually established the characters as individuals early on and THEN started nudging them together, but in ampho it's just. going way too hard way too soon and way too obviously to the point that it feels insincere. like a joke, lowkey.
