A lot of teachers nowadays handwave the internals away as "compiler is smart". Compiler can optimise simple things, but it can't think for you. e.g: Sometimes, the optimisation is to reorder your struct fields or code. The compiler can't intuit when the order doesn't matter, this is still your job.

I just hit myself with this again. I was looking into glDraw*Instanced, implemented them - crashed. I forgot I'm using OpenGL 3.0 where we got NONE of that! I've been spoiled by modern APIs, I need a moment to adjust.
