South Australia is drafting new biodiversity laws. It looks good, but alarmingly fungi are listed as plants. Also, under this Act landholders would be able to remove and fungus or algae from their land unless it is a prescribed species. 🌏 #conservation #fungi Have your say here:

Fantastic opportunity 👇 As part of the project Steering Group I can’t wait to see where this project goes…but also a bit jealous I don’t get to apply for it myself 🤣!

NEW RESEARCH: Seamounts are a HUB for sharks! New research on seamounts off Ascension Island has found that there are 41 TIMES the amount of sharks there than in the open ocean, despite no increase in primary productivity. Read the full paper here - doi.org/10.1371/jour... 🦑🌊🦤🌍🌐🧪 #AcademicSky

Our new paper, based on data from 1,705 studies, shows that pesticides are toxic to organisms they are not intended to harm, including fungi, microbes, plants, insects, & vertebrates such as ourselves. Questions the wisdom of applying over 3 million tonnes of them every year...

"Peatlands occupy just 3% of all land, but contain more carbon than all of the world’s forests. However, farmers and miners are draining the peatlands, releasing so much CO2 that if they were a country, they would be the fourth biggest polluter in the world." 🧪🌍 www.theguardian.com/environment/...

"Applicant: I really don’t like working a full week (for a full-time position). Is that OK?" is very much ok to ask about imo. I'd word it differently perhaps, but someone asking if there is flexibility or room to move on working conditions isn't a problem for me. doi.org/10.1002/fsh....

Silence so far from the Australian government on the current coral bleaching event on the northern Great Barrier Reef, repeating mass mortality there in 2016, 2017, 2020, and 2024, No press release = no Australian media coverage.

Fact-check: We don’t need yet more Reef monitoring - because counting mostly dead corals doesn’t stop climate change due to rising greenhouse gas emissions. www.newswise.com/articles/can...

1. Some years back I was taking a cab in Chicago and the taxi driver, discovering I was a writer, complained that all his young son wanted to read was comics. I made the point to him that reading comics was reading, and that his kid was taking pleasure in reading and at his age, that's important.

Hello Everyone! We're super excited to be here. @thembauk.bsky.social was established 140 years ago, and there has been a library on site at the Citadel Hill laboratory ever since it opened in 1888! We're looking forward to sharing our stories with you #library #books

Let's talk about eels & dams. 'Cause dams are a problem for eels now, but they haven't always been. Eels can live out of water for a while, & travel overland. Young eels climb up & around small waterfalls as they migrate. And so many medieval dams weren't a problem for them. 1/7 🗃️🧪

🚨Academic scientist friends who are members-ideally leaders- of scientific professional societies, I need your help. 🚨 There is a sign-letter being prepared that will speak out against recent politicization of scientific funding and demonization of scientific researchers. 🧪🌎🦑

To this effect, I want to support you all in this. If you have forgotten how awesome you are then reply to this and I'll remind you. Unfortunately, I don't know many of you. So link to your homepage, Google Scholar page, etc. so I can learn more about you.

Interesting paper showing that the set of bottom trawl closures that we suggested to protect VMEs in the EU (academic.oup.com/icesjms/arti...) may need better enforcement because, although effort has dropped, some bottom fishing activity continues. www.science.org/doi/full/10....
