one useful trick here i think is to look for inspiration and influences in places that aren't pop culture juggernauts. use the internet to your advantage: find weird stuff from decades ago that nobody talks about anymore or follow your independent contemporaries in other mediums

I’ve been pretty demotivated myself from applying to “zines” that look very high production, even though I’m a confident artist! I think people who run “zines” should understand what they’re saying by being so selective, and be honest about wanting to be able to sell a professional product

No you’re real for this. Me and my friend have been complaining about this and have just decided to make small zines together if this was going to keep happening. Wish more people were transparent about “hey we’re gonna be picky because we’re selling merch which needs to look good”

Obligatory shill time cause I have to be off work: my commission page is in my pins and I would appreciate if you could share it or comm me. I have Ko-Fi as well if you want to just toss a bit of money at me. Even small amounts help ko-fi.com/florrrfauna

I think also people don’t like when people only see their original character in the lens of another, which is fair, but short-sighted. Someone made a good point that people who aren’t artists usually don’t have enough art literacy to give a meaningful comment beyond comparison

I think people are worried about plagiarism. Online art communities with younger artists are notorious for ripping people apart at the slightest hint of copying. A lot of it is a poor understanding of inspiration and being transformative in art, leading comparisons to be interpreted as accusations.
