It is disgusting. Not only must Ukraine accept this blackmail, it must do so while also accepting the loss of 20% of its territory. That’s not ‘peace’ it is extortion.

The theory under which Ukraine should sign a minerals deal with the US when Trump is anyway going to ditch them is completely gonzo. Why on earth would Zelensky sign such a deal?

Trump may be a repulsive authoritarian who is destroying the entire global security architecture, but what if this is good for some reason? – my latest for the Spectator/Telegraph/Unherd.

Amazon gains full creative control of Bond. I'm not even particularly a fan, but it was impressive to see decades of fairly rigid quality control. You can now kiss that goodbye under this simpering halfwit. Just more sludge to be fed into the content engine. www.theguardian.com/film/2025/fe...

The idea that Merkel’s Germany was a model is part of the problem. She made good calls and bad ones, particularly on Russia.

We need collectively to reproduce the kind of tank and aircraft stockpiles that Russia and the United States have.

Oh god no. www.theguardian.com/film/2025/fe...

48% of Brits believe it is more important for the UK government to support Ukraine than to maintain good relations with the US

74% of Brits also believed it was ‘reasonable’ to postpone elections during a war with just 12% saying it was ‘unreasonable’

"That this House will under no circumstances fight for its King and country" - motion passed 275 votes to 153, 1933.

Did the US fight on the wrong side in World War II? This Federalist Society law professor thinks so.

👍👍

I think this is a very wise observation, and captures one of my many issues with the “checklists for fascism” style of commentary. What does it tell us about what to expect, what does it tell us about what is happening and what does it tell us about the classical fascist period? Achingly little, tbh

Unless you're Ukrainian, obvs. A joke of a paper, increasingly often.

A long queue outside the Ukrainian passport service office here in Wrocław where I’m on holiday.

Van Hollen: "Can you imagine FDR in the middle of WW2 saying to Churchill, 'you know, we're not going to continue to help you until you turn over half of your coal and mineral reserves.' That's not how you behave when you want to support a friend who's under attack by an authoritarian like Putin."
