#SarcophagusSaturday - The Pashley Sarcophagus, a sarcophagus showing the triumphal return of Dionysos from India. A Satyr carries a child behind an elephant, while two Maenads play the 'aulos' and two Satyrs sit on it. Found in Arvi (Crete), dated AD 125-150. Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge (UK).

Statue of Antinous depicted as Dionysus bearing a leopard skin. The nose, forearms and legs below the knees are missing. From the Roman baths of Aedepsus, a town on the northwestern coast of ancient Euboea. New Archaeological Museum of Chalkis Arethousa, Greece.

#RomanSiteSaturday - Hadrian's Arch in Jerusalem, a triumphal arch built in AD 135 on the Decumanus Maximus of Hadrian's new colony of Aelia Capitolina. The arch was a triple-arched gateway with a high central arch and two smaller arches; one is in the Ecce Homo Church, the other was demolished.

#RomanFortThursday - The Limes Fortlet in Pohl (Germany), an authentic replica of a small Limes fort with a watchtower. It provided space for a centuria of 80 men. Fortlets on the Limes featured a circular V-shaped ditch and an earth wall of turf blocks. The interiors housed U-shaped barrack blocks.

#MosaicMonday - The so-called Bikini Girls Mosaic from the Villa Romana del Casale near Piazza Armerina in Sicily. It depicts ten female athletes dressed in a subligaculum (loincloth short) and a strophium (breast cloth) doing various sports exercises and receiving awards. Dated to AD 320.

#AncientSiteSunday - The imposing Stadium at Messene in the Peloponnese. In use from the 3rd century BC to the 4th century AD, it has a horseshoe shape, is 182m long, and features 19 rows of seats. The stadium was used by athletes, but during the Roman period, it was used to watch gladiator fights.

Visited the island of Mozia yesterday with its Punic settlement of Motya (destroyed in 398 BC by Dionysius I of Syracuse and never resettled) and its magnificent marble Charioteer statue. 😍

This afternoon exploring Selinus, an ancient Greek city in Sicily. The archaeological site contains five Doric temples centred on an Acropolis. Selinus was one of the most important of the Greek colonies in Sicily, founded in the 7th century BC by colonists from Megara in Greece.

So happy to have finally visited Villa Romana del Casale! Definitely one of the best preserved and most impressive mosaic displays in the world with c.3,500 sq metres of 4th century mosaics. #archaeologytravel

This afternoon exploring the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, a UNESCO World Heritage site comprising of seven temples built between around 510 BC and 430 BC all in Doric style.

#AncientSiteSunday - The ancient synagogue at Sardis in western Asia Minor. The building, dating to the late 3rd century AD, was richly decorated with floor mosaics, marble wall decorations and many furnishings. It is the largest known synagogue from antiquity.

#SarcophagusSaturday - Phoenician anthropoid sarcophagi from Sidon, beautifully carved in white marble from Greece. The sarcophagi consist of a hollowed lower box covered by a lid that slightly conveys the contours of the upper body and the legs. Dated 5th century BC. National Museum of Beirut.

#RomanSiteSaturday - The Forum of Castellum Tidditanorum (Tiddis, Algeria), a small Roman forum on a 10×30m terrace oriented north-south. It featured three east-facing rooms cut into the slope, likely serving civic purposes, including a curia. Inscribed pedestals honour distinguished citizens.

#OnThisDay in AD 62 (or 63), Pompeii was severely damaged by an earthquake. The event is commemorated in a bas-relief that decorated the lararium of the House of Lucius Caecilius Iucundus, showing the damage to the Temple of Jupiter and its statues during the earthquake. #ReliefWednesday

#TombTuesday - The Libyco-Punic Mausoleum of Dougga (Tunisia), a remarkable 2nd-century BC royal tomb standing 21 metres high. The Punic-Libyan inscription states the mausoleum was dedicated to Numidian Prince Ateban. It features three levels and combines local and Hellenistic elements.

#MosaicMonday - Mask of Oceanus with lobster claws protruding from the head and dolphins and fish escaping from his beard. Found in Cordoba (Spain) in 1959 and dated 2nd/3rd century AD. Salón de los Mosaicos (Hall of Mosaics), Alcazar of the Christian Monarchs, Cordoba.

#AncientSiteSunday - Claros, an ancient Greek sanctuary situated on the Ionian coast near Ephesus. It was a significant prophecy centre like Delphi and Didyma, housing a temple and oracle of Apollo, worshipped as Apollo Clarius. Many visited for guidance and prophecies until the 4th century AD.

#RomanSiteSaturday - The Augusteum of Narona (Croatia), a temple dedicated to the cult of the Emperor. Founded in 10 BC, the Augusteum had four columns across the front supporting a triangular pediment and a cella with a mosaic floor. 17 statues of emperors and the imperial family were excavated.

Happy February! The Kalends of February honoured Juno Sospita, the Roman state goddess. A sanctuary in Lanuvium was wealthy enough for Octavian to borrow from it. February was a month for purification. The Romans celebrated Lupercalia, a festival designed to purify the city and encourage fertility.

#RomanFortThursday - The Hadrianic legionary base at Lambaesis (Algeria), the headquarters of Legio III Augusta. The base spans 24 ha, bordered by walls, towers and four gates. The prominent feature is the four-sided arch in the camp's centre, a groma, which served as the entrance to the principia.
