Weather word of the week: normal. When you hear weather forecasters talking about weather parameters like temperature being near/above/below “normal”, normal is referring to the long-term average value for a certain area. Normals are usually taken from data averaged over a 30 year period.

Weather word of the week: temperature inversion. A temperature inversion is a layer in the atmosphere in which air temperature increases with height. This is most commonly seen at night, when there are clear skies with little to no wind. The air near the ground cools quicker than the air aloft.
