LLMs might be nicer than humans but not nicer than my co-authors for sure <3

The countdown to #ICWSM 2025 is on! 🎉 🌞 Expect warm summer days in Copenhagen! Tap water in Denmark is safe and delicious. Just bring a refillable bottle to stay hydrated! 💧 Don’t forget to check out the “Know Before You Go” guide for essential info: 📄 docs.google.com/document/d/1...

AI-assisted social media posting increases the volume of content people produce. However, that content is perceived as lower quality than purely human-generated posts. A dangerous spiral that may flood social media with low-quality content. Results from a controlled study: arxiv.org/abs/2506.14295

This is a poor argument against LLM simulations. It suggests that LLM-based behavioral models should capture nuances that no model ever has (do agent-based models go to the toilet?). Ofc, ABM is meant to be interpretable, but social science also needs predictive power (where LLM simulations excel)

Our paper "Conspiracy theories and where to find them on TikTok" has been accepted at the Main conference of @aclmeeting.bsky.social 2025! Great work led by @fracorso.bsky.social supervised by @gdfm.bsky.social and yours truly. For more details check the preprint: arxiv.org/abs/2407.12545

Large Language Model-based social simulation has emerged as an exciting new research method. But do LLMs actually resolve the problems that have historically limited use of Agent-Based Models? What do they bring? We review the literature to find out! with Maik Laaroij arxiv.org/abs/2504.03274

New paper out in npj Complexity today. We construct large data-informed US-based contact networks (~20M nodes) and explore how misinformed populations can affect the spread of disease.

New paper: Modeling the amplification of epidemic spread by individuals exposed to misinformation on social media 🧪 Simulations informed by social media data yield a worst-case bound on additional infections due to exposure to online vaccine misinfo. It's not good. www.nature.com/articles/s44...

📢 Deadline Extended for submissions to #CySoc2025 to ensure broader participation. 💡Share your research on generative AI, online safety, harms and threats, or political conflict in online platforms, with the leading minds in the field. We’d love to see your submissions. 📆New Deadline: April 10 AoE

🚨🚨Due to multiple requests, the deadline for the #CySoc workshop has been extended until April 10!🚨🚨 Make sure to get your submissions in!

"Urban Highways Are Barriers to Social Ties" out on PNAS! The 1st large-scale measure of how highways weaken social connections between the communities they separate. This barrier effect is strong in the 50 largest US cities--especially for low-income Black communities. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Our open review portal is down, but our team is working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. In light of this, the submission deadline has been extended to Feb 26, 23:59 AoE. We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience caused.

Wastewater from airplane toilets? We introduce a global Aircraft-Based Wastewater Surveillance Network (WWSN) for pandemic monitoring in Nature Medicine 🔗 doi.org/10.1038/s415... Aircraft-based wastewater surveillance allows for real-time, non-invasive monitoring of global pathogen spread Short 🧵

🚨 Call for Papers! 🚨 We’re excited to announce the 6th International Workshop on Cyber Social Threats hashtag#CySoc2025 that will be held at hashtag#ICWSM2025 in Denmark! 🎉 🌍 Spotlight Topic: "Political Conflicts in Online Platforms in the Era of Gen-AI." 📅 Submission Deadline: March 31, 2025

Most tests for LLM biases use questionnaires, asking the model to generate a stance towards a given topic. Sadly, biases can re-emerge when the model is used in the application context. We show that apparently unbiased LLMs exhibit strong biases in conversations. Preprint: arxiv.org/abs/2501.14844

🚨 Call for Papers 🚨 We are organizing a Special Issue on "Risks and Unintended Harms of Generative AI Systems" at ACM TIST! More details here: dl.acm.org/journal/tist... Deadline: May 31, 2025 (review on a rolling basis) #LLM #misinformation #disinformation #AI #genAI

Our latest paper shows how a single choice by many social media platforms—to treat all resharing as if from the original poster—can drastically reshape our understanding of the social dynamics on those platforms. 🧪 Details in thread below:
