It is good to see Europe voicing commitment to Science and extending a hand to the scientific community in the US. As a dual french and american citizen leading a research center in Norway since 2021 and after 15 years in the US academia, this all feels quite close to home.

Thrilled to see my first PhD paper finally out in @pnas.org !!! We investigated the macroevolutionary dynamics of South American #Mammals across the Eocene-Oligocene Transition (~34 millions of years ago) 🦥❄️ www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

NEW 🧵 The number of people travelling from Europe to the US in recent weeks has plummeted by as much as 35%, as travellers have cancelled plans in response to Trump’s policies and rhetoric, and horror stories from the border. Story: www.ft.com/content/6dc1...

1. For the past thirty years I've had the best job in the world.
I've had the opportunity to follow my curiosity; explore the workings of nature and society; mentor students and junior colleagues in the same process; and teach generations of students about it all.

" (...) French researcher was expelled from the country for expressing "a personal opinion" on Trump." I fear it is now not safe for Europeans to do conferences in the US. www.lbc.co.uk/world-news/d...

"Your job is to have ideas and spread them so that they impact other people’s work. Writing is your job. Nothing else. Therefore, everything else that you do is subservient to the activity of writing. Let this revolution take place in your mind." www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Thinking about flipping your journal to Diamond OA? Check out this guide from the Netherlands' Diamond Expertise Centre buff.ly/0lVMMq2 FYI, PCI is mentioned there too 😉 #OpenAccess #AcademicPublishing

Big news: we are setting up a new non-profit organization to run bioRxiv and medRxiv. It's called openRxiv [no it's not a new preprint server; it's dedicated organization to oversee the servers] openrxiv.org 1/n

openRxiv has arrived! We’re thrilled to announce the launch of openRxiv as an independent, researcher-led nonprofit to oversee bioRxiv and medRxiv, the world’s leading preprint servers for life and health sciences. openrxiv.org/introducing-... #openRxiv #OpenScience #Preprints #bioRxiv #medRxiv

This is Marco Rubio explaining how the USA promised to defend Ukraine forever if they got rid of their nuclear arsenal left after the Soviet Union fell. This is why lil marco was sinking into the couch. He was hoping we wouldn’t find it…so don’t RT right now this very second.

What a shit show by the two dickheads who serve as US president and vice-president

After yesterday's embarrassing display in the White House, this cartoon from @economist.com seems even more appropriate.

I think people both within science and outside science don’t fully appreciate the miracle that were the Covid-19 vaccines. How much courage it took to get the sequence out, how much work had already gone into figuring out the best viral antigen and how best to present it. 1/

I re-ran previous ONT basecalling benchmarks using the latest version of Dorado (thanks, @vellamike.bsky.social), and the RTX 40 series GPUs show an impressive speed boost! Check out the updated benchmark results at the bottom of this post: rrwick.github.io/2024/08/16/s...

Last first-author paper finally published! This took too many years but even after leaving research we manage to get it done, with Odile Maliet, @leandrist.bsky.social, @noguesbravo.bsky.social, @n8upham.bsky.social, Walter Jetz, and really supportive Hélène Morlon www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Bluetorial-A dream and a bit of a nightmare Serving as Editor-in-Chief at Science was fascinating. I greatly enjoyed working with talented and committed editorial, news, graphics, and production staff. But the inside look into scientific publishing and AAAS was also deeply disillusioning.

Fellow Mammalogists. As many of you are aware, science is in a state of turmoil in the United States. Recent efforts to drastically reduce government workforces and research funding for science will lead to many adverse consequences for Earth’s remaining natural ecosystems.

NEW: NSF confirmed that they fired 168 employees today, out of their staff of ~1,500 feds. This includes some people who'd finished their 1-year probationary periods, which were extended to 2-years last month without explanation. More to come.

I am deeply saddened to have learned of the death, on Feb 5, 2025, of Elisabeth Vrba—a fantastically creative scientist and a warm, wonderful human being. She leaves us a legacy of original macroevolutionary thinking that is still fresh and illuminating.

New @erc.europa.eu funded #ConvergeAnt paper on phylogenetics and transcriptomics of chitinase gene repertoires in convergent ant-eating mammals finally published in @genomebiolevol.bsky.social doi.org/10.1093/gbe/...

Between 2019 and 2023, researchers paid $8.968 billion to make papers open access. Imagine what else could be done with this money if it wasnt paid to for profit publishing companies... 👉 arxiv.org/abs/2407.16551

Hi, ISEM is coming to Bluesky, if you're interested in #evolutionarybiology, if you're curious about the research being carried out in #Palaeo++ #GlobalChange… You've come to the right place! @cnrsoccitanieest.bsky.social @umontpellier.bsky.social @ird-fr.bsky.social @cirad.bsky.social

People, just stop doing Frontiers special issues. Find a nice diamond open access journal, and self-publish and collaboratively peer review the set of papers you all want to write. Do not give Frontiers money. They add no value. If anything, they hurt your reputation. MDPI is of course even worse.

🔥The X exodus is massive! Don't lose any of your followers. Thanks to #HelloQuitX I've registered 2341 new passengers for a journey to #BlueSky & #Mastodon. Join us and automatically find your communities on #January20! app.helloquitx.com

Here's a nice free app to transfer your X account to BlueSky, share with people around you: app.helloquitx.com/en/dashboard The plan is to jointly leave X on Jan 20.

Here are some 2024 highlights of PCI and Peer Community Journal.📊 Grateful to everyone who contributed to this success🦸. We're excited and prepared for an amazing 2025🤩!

NEW: 2024 has just been confirmed as the warmest year on record, and the first to breach the 1.5C threshold. We used a ridgeline (Joy Division inspired) chart to visualise daily temperature anomalies since 1940. 2024 clearly stands out with 100% of its days above 1.3C and 75% above 1.5C.

I made this over the break. Why would I do such a thing? Am I some sort of #phylogenetics dork? Well... yes, but that's not why. To fully explain I'll have to do one of those sewing-strings-wrapped-around-a-spool dealies. 1/ 🧪

APCs, amongst other things are out of control within the publishing industry.

Hi everybody, newcomer to bluesky (seems great), let me share our last results on open science in eco-evo. #ScientificPublishing #EvolutionaryBiology 1/4

This is a catastrophe. While Finland has downgraded the MDPI and Frontiers journals to level 0 (meaning these publications are not recognized for research evaluation purposes), Germany has signed an agreement to promote publications in MDPI journals.
