My article on my favorite affordable Canadian whisky, Lot No. 40, that is a 100% rye and around 6 year old was published in Men's Journal (the text is mine, the title is theirs): www.mensjournal.com/food-drink/l...

I find it inspiring yet sad and ironic that brand folks are putting up anti-Trump stories and posts, yet the companies that they work for (and that they post about on the same account) donate to Trump and other Republican causes. A job is a job, I guess.

I never thought that I would need a phone app on my Droid to speed dial my Senator and Representatives. I highly recommend the "5 Calls" app -- took a minute to figure out what I was going to say and 4 minutes to call my 3 Congressfolk.

If Republican Senators & Representatives want to enact Congressional oversight on Trump's tariffs, they know that their bids in 2026 and 2028 are doomed otherwise. Inflation, American business closing, recession, and lost jobs aren't a good look.

Can Senator @corybooker.com teach a master class to young bartenders? He was able to give a speech for 25 hours straight without food or stepping off to use the bathroom (or in the young bartenders' case to vape).

Does garnish increase the number of likes on Instagram? 244 drinks of mine, up or on the rocks, that were over 1 week old. Up/Garnish 53.98 likes (n=103) Up/None 54.49 likes (n=44) Rocks/Garnish 54.53 likes (n=77) Rocks/None 56.70 likes (n=20) Statistically, pretty much the same.

At Speed Rack tonight, I witnessed in the semifinals a bartender jiggering who was beat out by a few seconds in speed by a free pourer but ended up winning because her drinks were actually balanced.

I hope the WaybackMachine of Archive-dot-org is saving valuable website copy and images to repair the government websites taken down when 2029 finally rolls around.

I remember months ago hearing someone say "If this were France, we would would be burning stuff in protest." I guess we've reached that level in the last few weeks.

My first beer article got published in Men's Journal! The history of bock, how it turned religious and spring-associated with the dopplebock, morphed over time into the weizenbock, maibock, and eisbock, and why there's a plastic goat on some of the bottles. www.mensjournal.com/food-drink/w...

French Senator Malhuret gives the best world view I've heard of what's happening in the U.S. including power grabs with Russia and China, what Ukraine means to the free world, and some great jabs at Trump and ''Un bouffon sous kétamine''. youtu.be/G-lh0TUTtvI?...

Cheers to the Bottled in Bond Act of March 3rd 1897, one of the few consumer protection laws not under attack right now. Protection against adulterated whiskey pre-dated that of food and medication, and given our current trends, it may post-date it as well. Happy 128th birthday B-i-B!

My third article in Men's Journal went live yesterday about Connemara that brought back the lost style of peated Irish whiskey to the world. www.mensjournal.com/food-drink/c...

Two different sets of guests tonight were complaining about the political situation in this country in front of me. The elephant in the room has taken a seat at the bar and has to be acknowledged both for compassion and community reasons.

In a Reddit Cocktails thread today on Punt e Mes drinks, someone posted my Trash Polka drink that was a Ferrari (Fernet/Campari) taken by way of the Redhook & finished off like a Sazerac. Named for a German style of tattooing with black & red motifs: cocktailvirgin.blogspot.com/2022/07/tras...

An ad that just popped up: a company that suggested ordering now to get pre-Trump prices. Oh man.

Stockhausen syndrome is a proposed condition or theory that tries to explain why music listeners sometimes develop a psychological enjoyment with brash, disruptive, and crashing sounds.

One moment that stands out from 2024 that might be the way to think about 2025: when I visited a bar for dinner, at the end, the bartender who I knew asked if I would do a shot with him. His persuading remark was "You never know if this could be our last chance together."

My 15th annual best drinks of the year is out! Top drink of the month with 2 runners up mentioned. Plus a few favorite recipes that I created in 2024. Cheers! cocktailvirgin.blogspot.com/2025/01/fred...
