I think it is a possibility that borderlands 4 winds up being really cool and renewing big mainstream interest in the franchise but I also think it's plausible that this new one is a total dud that kills the franchise

I don't think I ever tried the ninja turtles variant but I used to love these hostess fruit pies in general, really a shame most of the flavors have disappeared!

Yeah of course
Btw you see a huge pot of soup boiling away on a stove like 10 minutes into the game

Super nice of him and I always laugh thinking about it, I must have gone to stores hundreds of times trying to get one of these things and he just stumbles on one while buying a microwave or something. Sometimes it just pans out like that I guess

Then one day I'm busy and can't go. "no worries" I figure, they probably won't have one anyway. As it turns out, a co-worker of mine swung by for something totally unrelated and saw they had one sitting there. He texted me knowing I had been obsessively trying to get one and picked it up for me!

For some reason, I was just supremely unlucky when it came to the original switch and trying to snag one. I was trying for months and months but everybody was always sold out. My office was near a best buy so eventually I got into the habit of swinging by every day on my lunch break

If I was there it would have been like that scene in Jason takes Manhattan where he punches the guy's head clean off except out would have been me punching Jason's head off

I don't mean that as a gatekeepy insult btw, it is a testament to the popularity of his stuff that a not insignificant number of people believe he pioneered this trope

Many of the examples cited in the thread are quite well known too, but there's plenty of folks out there who are into the Toby Fox games that don't have a lot of familiarity with gaming outside of that
comment in response to

This one is a really interesting example because it's something games have been doing for many years, and has been used effectively as a major plot device in various games (such as the fredo example of baten kaitos)

Update: checked the quoted thread and lots of people mentioned this along with several other things
The point being as you suggest here it is definitely not a thing that's unique to undertake and deltarune! Heck, dragon quest 3 even does this in a way
comment in response to
post
Baiten kaitos also had a very interesting implementation of this trope! I remember this was also the case with at least one of the fire emblem games, maybe the gba one?

Yeah I was talking about it a bit on stream, pretty fascinating stuff and I feel like this one occupies a similar space, being heavier on the puzzle and investigation stuff compared to other games of this type

Yes correct, I talked about this on stream! This series originally predates resident evil and was obviously a big influence on it. It has been rebooted a few times since then, so it's this confusing thing where there are like 4 different continuities of alone in the dark with this being the latest

never heard of this but it sounds extremely up my alley
comment in response to

Yeah that's interesting - I talked about this on stream but it's one of those things that has me wondering. Maybe they thought it would look too cynical if they really put it front and center in the marketing
comment in response to
post
Yeah I agree, but it's one of those 7s where it tries some really interesting things and is dragged down by some problems versus the type of 7 where it's just kind of ok across the board
