i was thinking about building something like this that analysed the content of blocked/banned accounts for political views, aggression etc
could also take a username and get their most recent 200 posts in their feed and do similar analysis
not much time, but tempted

took me a while to learn this, but it was so liberating when i did
i've since given myself license to make every mistake once
ideally i won't, but if i do, so be it, but if i make the same mistake twice, that's a more serious issue, three times and i'm a fool

clothing is definitely the issue here derek good point

no surprise to see verstappen being aggressive, would like to see that again to see who was at fault but i’m glad drivers are happy to take the contact, can’t let him bully the field

it is distrubingly good

yeah we'll probably need solutions, i don't think about it too much as i've seen enough black mirror for one lifetime 🙈

I have conflicting feelings about more devices (especially those with cameras) but can't deny the idea is enticing

won’t be long until that’s supported with ar glasses tho

that can be true and a horrible truth whilst also not endorse, celebrate or invite murdering by group
that’s my only point that we should be quite careful normalising that
hopefully not a controversial take

she’s clearly been caught off guard in a storm here and that’s no fun for anyone, but that doesn’t make me inclined to believe that words mean something they don’t, from a professional wordsmith
comment in response to
post
“we” clearly means “i and others in my group”
as a popular journalist she has two key characteristics here that are important:
1. she knows how words work
2. she knows the influence she has over others
if she misspoke on it then retract and apologise, but trying to redefine words doesn’t add up

i hadn’t seen this, so thank you for sharing joshua
i can empathise if she posted in emotion and haste, and regrets what she said. unfortunately she doesn’t seem to regret it, and stands by the statement.
to say that the “we” in “we want executives dead” means “lots of people” simply isn’t true

i’ll try my best mike but may only end up fumbling my way in the dark, hopefully without unnecessary damage en route
cautiously optimistic

lovely username

you may be right mike, certainly my perspective is limited, and i appreciate your nuance and good faith engagement
obviously there’s no burden on anyone to educate me but hopefully i can learn over time on this, as i’d be delighted if my confidence in this platform grew (it’s already *not bad*)

the commitment to free speech is at the protocol level which is great(!) but seems less so at the appview level, at least the community guidelines don’t mention it at all, but maybe it’s somewhere else i’ve missed
comment in response to
post
my main concern is the community guidelines are all about creating a welcoming respectful community but that’s only if you fit who they want here, otherwise the answer is ~“use the protocol but not this appview”
which is understandable, but seems to create unnecessary echo chambers in my opinion

in terms of taste we all prefer the stuff we don’t like to be fully banned, but my pref is towards less moderation/censorship for non-illegal stuff and use labels, lists and default user prefs (w/ prompt to confirm during onboarding)
bsky’s setup here seems really close to this tech wise
comment in response to

it’s a great question and my thoughts are lightly held
my main hope is that platforms apply the rules consistently, so if you decide to allow posts celebrating the murder of a specific person and their group you should allow that for other groups too
obviously both are distasteful and concerning
comment in response to
post
will take a look, thanks joshua
and thanks for engaging in a civil, constructive way about a hot potato, not an easy one
comment in response to
post
yes definitely! we should never expect perfection, just best intentions and direction
the intentions are good, i just have concerns about the application and direction
hopefully my concerns will prove unfounded, but struggled to quell them so far despite lots of trying
comment in response to
post
yeah i’m open to being educated on that front too!
i know jack was pro free speech but struggled to build that as policy, and obviously a lot has changed since then
also not saying twitter is better, just feel like this place could be great if lists/labels were used over bans more often
comment in response to
post
that’s very fair, i hope that my understanding and perspective is limited and that the picture is much better than what i’ve seen
have struggled to get clarity in my questions so far, but know the team are mad busy
any recommended reading?
comment in response to
post
thanks mubs, hopefully you’re right as 90% of the foundations here are great! would love for this place to succeed as long as it doesn’t unnecessarily contribute to the problem
comment in response to
post
thanks craig, and appreciate yours too
hopefully we can build the best place for folks from different perspectives to respectfully engage, realise that’s a very hard problem though
i don’t have all the answers, just some questions that i’ve yet to find answers that feel great to me
comment in response to
post
i hope you’re right, but in all my questions trying to understand if this appview will lean towards free speech or censorship it’s primarily censorship but only if you don’t hold the correct opinion
was hopeful that lists/labels would solve this rather than bans at appview level for opinions
comment in response to
post
i understand this is a hard problem, i just have concerns is all, and think we should be mindful of the platform so we make our own informed choice
i won’t bleat on this forever dw
comment in response to
post
yeah that’s fair, i bet there’s been a lot of folks looking to troll and can understand that’s tiresome
just surprised that wasn’t stated and free speech even mentioned in the community guidelines
it’s a principle of the network, not this appview
if it is no-one has told me yet
comment in response to
post
i agree of course, but the line the team have chosen to set is based upon making sure content here is “welcoming” and “respectful” and if you share an opinion a protected group don’t like you will be banned
the line should be far closer to illegal content than thinking the wrong thing
