within that, a picture of events emerges: the elderly couple claims Diane, who passes through the gate of death (blue box) and emerges into the brighter TV-like reality and is released into it and... comes across her own body, like she's in an out of body experience, once she's lost her memory.

it is also a circular movie: the murder of the thriller happens at the end, elderly couple comes and claims Diane's soul, then we see the couple *release the soul as Betty* into the world of heightened reality at the *start* - these are not disconnected events. That's psycopomp shit.
