I don’t feel like *celebrating* Women’s Day. Make every day women’s Day where ALL women are given equal rights, agency,, choices, safety, respect, recognition. Do not tick boxes on one day. Do not use it to sell things. Do not pretend to be an ally but stay silent. Do it all EVERY SINGLE DAY.

I wanted to share our beautiful synthetic gut community Com20, highlighting my favourites 🧪cutie little R. intestinalis shaped like a banana 🧫big boss C. perfringens needs privacy around its rods 🧪E. ramosum showing it’s spores @lisamaierlab.bsky.social #microbiome #MicrobiomeSky #microscopy

For everyone in the UK of a certain age… it’s pppppppppancake day! youtu.be/lS9J4vJ5K78?...

This would be a great webinar for ECRs and MCRs (choose your own definition).

Sandringham is larger than Dumfries House (to where Trump was invited). It's one of those things the British do *very* well, making you think you've reached the pinnacle of invitations and then realise you're at the bottom of some miscellaneous hierarchy. The true art of the deal.

The Royal Society in London has called a meeting to discuss the behaviour of fellows following a growing campaign by scientists over the membership of Elon Musk. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

OK folks, I have now created a google form that allows people to sign to show their support for my open letter to the President of the Royal Society. Please sign and share widely: forms.gle/miDciq35oxyw...

We're making an exciting thing with @neaveeng.bsky.social! This will eventually be a low-cost robotic ventilator to use in the lab. Thanks to @ukbiofilms.bsky.social for funding this proof-of-concept collaboration 🦠🤖 #MicroSky

Do you work on #biofilms? Do you want to tell people about it? Abstract submission for posters only has re-opened for Biofilms 11 microbiologysociety.org/event/societ... #MicroSky

I’m in!

I had an MRC application rejected w/ excellent reviews last summer. On Friday, I had an incredibly helpful meeting with a programme manager to discuss what the panel expected in a resubmission. While obv disappointed with the outcome, I’m really impressed with how constructive the response has been.

A weekend non-science post: a beautiful selection of classic body art photography in the Guardian today www.theguardian.com/artanddesign...

#MicroSky job alert! Want to work on Pseudomonas anti-phage systems? A very cool project.

One of my favourite science puns is the fact that @amiposts.bsky.social called their email newsletter "In the Loop." That is all. #MicroSky

Evidence for ginger as a potential medicinal ingredient in a medieval leprosarium: very cool interdisciplinary work! The authors found ginger starch grains in dental calculus, and compared the calculus microbiome of medieval & modern people #ancientbiotics www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Welcome to bsky, Applied Microbiology International! @amiposts.bsky.social #MicroSky

Do you know a UK-based wheelchair user who works in a lab and would be willing to user-test our prototype of what is believed to be the first-ever lab coat adapted for wheelchair users? Please share far & wide! Interest form: forms.office.com/e/66FhcQjqRT More info: www.ucl.ac.uk/ucl-east/new...

Teaching critical analysis and contested histories in school - this looks like an excellent charity to support: parallelhistories.org.uk

One of my undergrad tutees has made an online portfolio to show off her impressive #SciComm work 💜 kusumscicom.wixsite.com/communicatio...

An excellent opportunity for any #MicroSky people who work on biofilm. I’d jump at this if I weren’t happily settled where I am - NBIC have had such a positive impact on biofilm research.

Welcome to bluesky, @microbiologysociety.org 🦠🥳 #MicroSky

Preprint alert! @phoebesilva.bsky.social has been optimising synthetic CF sputum formulations to enable work with NTHis. This will hopefully enable much-needed work on this early lung pathogen, whose incidence seems to be increasing in the post-modulator era www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... #MicroSky

Molecular imaging of bacterial biofilms - a systematic review. This is a super, information-dense review of different techniques used to show the location of different molecules in pathogen biofilms - highly recommended: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.... #MicroSky

#MicroSky! Gliding motility in S. aureus produces “comets.”

I didn’t fully clock my bicep gains until I tried on my Regency gown ready for a 12th night dance. New cuffs, a little un-pleating and I shall go to the ball! I love this silk 🪡🧵

Is is acceptable for a Fellow of the @royalsociety.org to promote white supremacism? What message does it send about their commitment to an inclusive academy?

Sharing three fully funded PhD opportunities to join my lab at Queen’s to work on topics spanning bacterial pathogens, antibiotic resistance, microbial interactions, & mobile genetic elements 🦠. Closing dates in January and February, and open to international candidates 🌍 Projects detailed below ⬇️

40 years ago all of Genbank was published in print form by NAR. The same format today would require over 4 light seconds of shelf space. To a year of progress in 2025.

I like this idea - I would say that oral presentation skills among incoming undergrad students are pretty good overall, but you can tell who has had prior practice and feedback. Also potentially inclusive (e.g. dyslexic students may benefit?) and can reduce workload (as you mark talks ‘live’).
