In general I think my heavy focus on vertex colors for lighting has had the biggest impact. There is a lot more going on in this one but I referenced the old monster hunter games when creating it. They do a really good job of blending 3D environments into 2D backdrops in clever ways.

It's a mix. I usually start by baking some simple environment lighting and then work over it by hand, adding highlights, shadows, and color variation

For the visuals Iād say the big ones are Goldeneye, Deus Ex, and Soldier of Fortune but there are many others
