"We must do something... any ideas?" "Pivoting to video is something I heard people did?" "That's something. We must do that!"

Scary as all hell when your early 20's uncle takes you as a 7 year old, and then you wake up in the spare room in his flat (share house) around dawn the following morning, and the doorknob is too high to reach, and no-one else in the place is awake for hours...

And you know he would have been a sore loser ... And he (and you know who) would have then gone to "war", and popcorn futures would spike even further through the troposphere...

It's the gamble that they'll win anyway because labour not yet got shit together + it's not usual that a 1st term government lose, and it's what they want to do, and then they can say they campaigned on it and have the mandate.

At the decibel levels you're talking about it's not practical to make a big enough difference.

Also, accounting for the random "you need to update [insert torture app here] before you can join the meeting"... That of course never happens when you're actually early cos Murphy's Law.

As an ADHD haver... Joining it early while you remember allows you to float to whatever, and then have your attention pulled to the meeting as people join, rather than getting distracted with something and missing the start...

Oh, the old "I'm just an incompetent bumbling man, you should totally just take my intentions as what I say they were, now that I'm caught" defence.

Reader, it was not embezzlement...

Oh not as a probable reason for the investigation... I just meant that I believe our police force probably doesn't have as much monetary corruption to deal with... Just the appalling sexism /abuse of power and racism culture.

Saw something about investigation into conduct relating to a younger female non-sworn staff memberin one of the articles?

I was hoping it was financial... But deep down I knew it would be the other thing... I suspect our police force is just not that financially corrupt - not the same incentives as other jurisdictions. It's always either racism or sexual misconduct.

I so wanted Nominative Determinism to be in play... I mean: McSkimming!!! It's right there for the taking! I just knew it would be the other thing, though... 😞

Many things would be different! I imagine we'd all be wearing WWI era german spiked helmets, for one...

Or some other recursive bull... but the important thing is they're trying to tweak your curiosity into replying to ask them what it is... at which point they've identified you as someone who can be swayed.

Thanks @graemeedgeler.bsky.social I have confirmed the same source and transmission vector.

Still a great source for 4 digit pin numbers.
comment in response to post
We were 4 digits in Laingholm / Titirangi, and dialling a 2 for an outside line in front of every number not on that exchange. I think the switch to 7 digits came after pushtone phones replacing rotary dials, but it might have been at the same time...

But by all the gods, Google search has gone downhill, even when using phrase operators etc. Chicken seems to have sent it down a "he's looking for recipes" path, and interpreting strapped as "how to truss a chicken for roasting"
comment in response to post
Thankyou! Confirms what I was finding as being military idiom in origin, as the "strap down chicken test" - strapping the chicken down to claim that your solution was lethal to chickens, when the problem was getting a clear shot on them through the trees...

Tagging in the Public Address crew, as that's the only other place it's come up in my searches... Is it a particularly NZ lefty politics thing that I've taken to have wider usage?

@publicaddress.bsky.social ? @graemeedgeler.bsky.social ? Bueller? Anyone?
comment in response to post
@norightturnnz.bsky.social the best results that came up for the phrase "strapping the chicken" were several of your blog post titles and I know the meaning a "forcing the desired answer by tinkering with the terms, facts, or question you're asking" ... But where does the phrase originate?

I'll clarify, I'm not usually an "I need to house that cat" person. I do like animals and they seem to love me, but I don't have the regular schedule to care for them.
comment in response to post
I'm not usually a cat person, but my best friend at high school had a pair of siblings-from-different-litters Burmese cats who had such personality and I loved them... This is the first time my insides went "if he needs a home..." to a found-a-cat post.
