Spending the last few days at my home and I can never get used to this view. The himalayan range in the background steals the show. Pretty curious about the phage diversity here though.

Back at NISER to catch up with my old lab and friends. One thing that always amazes me is the sand art.

Being back in India has rejuvenated my hatred towards high beams and people driving with high beams in the middle of the night. I had forgotten how annoying those are.

I can't see these names being adopted in the short to medium term. I certainly won't be insisting on their use. Just keep in mind that creation of new names doesn't formally ban old ones. So whatever facilitates clearest communication is best. www.science.org/content/arti...

You know you have a big dog when the bandana you got him from UK marked specifically for “large adult dogs” looks like this. Time to bust out the ol’ towel and make a bandana out of it.

Successfully scaled the Win Hill in the Peak District while casually chatting about unkillable superbugs… ya’know… like normal people.

The 4 stages of any experiment

Managed to run ChimeraX on a Meta Quest VR headset and working with protein structures is a lot more fun now.

Following the news that eLife will not receive an Impact Factor in 2025, we’ve shared an update on how our model is doing since we were first placed “on hold” by Web of Science, and what we’re up to now. Find out more. https://buff.ly/3ATRAFT

First snow of the season is here #Sheffield

Autumn has finally arrived at my home.

Isolated a phage tail in my plate while eating a donut in Newcastle.

WE WON THE GOLD MEDAL! Sheffield iGEM team cracking it. #SyntheticBiology #iGEM

iGEM being a big enough deal to advertise in the Paris airport feels like a pretty big deal

Final judging presentation tomorrow from iGEM Sheffield at 9:30AM. Had to stay up all night fixing up the presentations but it’ll be all over soon. 🤞🏻

iGEM Grand Jamboree is here… and we’re here! It’s been a great day of synthetic biology talks here at Paris!

“Time you enjoy wasting on dogs is not wasted time” - Albert Einstein, probably.

Attacking the Internet Archive is just vile and disgusting, especially for these “freedom loving” hackers. I wouldn’t be surprised if some big publisher was behind all this. www.theverge.com/2024/10/9/24...

Congratulations to the new Dr Buddle and huge thanks to @smitslab.bsky.social and @corrigar.bsky.social for acting as excellent examiners!

Snapped this during a particularly clear night at Ruhr-Universität, Germany. It’s crazy what phone cameras are capable of nowadays.

It seems to be a good week for biotech after a series of bad ones. Almost $600M investment in Emergent, Genespire, Amgen and more. The last few weeks may have made me sick but it’s all compensated now.

Had a great lab away day yesterday in the Peak District. A fairly casual one this time, focussing on research funding followed by an extended lunch in a lovely pub as the weather was too bad for a hike

About time someone sued these publishers for essentially making an utter disastrous mess out of academic publishing while making a crap ton of profit. www.highereddive.com/news/6-major...

Quite an interesting approach. It looks like a complex system but highly efficient. Can’t wait to see if I can try it our lab with phages other than those of E. coli.
