When a cabinet member announces "We are using the military to liberate an American city from its elected leaders," where do you go from there. What is left to say. The idea of that being anything short of a near-universal "Wait, what the fuck is going on" moment proves how far we've backslid.

A journalist got fired this week for calling this guy a hater, something that's just objectively true and has been true since he was a kid.

James Garfield understood exactly who Robert E. Lee was

It’s completely insane that US troops are illegally deployed to suppress domestic opposition and it’s not uniformly condemned by the press and political elite.

Trump underwater in literally every single issue. 38% approval overall. 27% approval on his spending bill. 40% approval on deportations. Musk also at 30% approval. 38% approval for RFK Jr. 35% approval for JD Vance. Nobody fucking wants any of this. poll.qu.edu/poll-release...

I would love to see orders of magnitude more discussion about what "swing voters" should figure out, deal with, suck up, get a clue about, etc and orders of magnitude less discussion about how protestors should coddle random third party's hallucinations about this section of the electorate

The idea that the progressive left used the internet to bully institutions into accepting unpopular, far-left positions is the exact opposite of what has actually happened. The alt-right used the internet for ideological capture and they are now in the White House bragging about it daily

"nullification of the election results" = "winning imbued trump with sovereign authority and so all opposition to him is illegitimate and illegal"

W.E.B. Du Bois on Robert E. Lee: “Either he knew what slavery meant when he helped maim and murder thousands in its defense, or he did not. If he did not he was a fool. If he did, Robert Lee was a traitor and a rebel–not indeed to his country, but to humanity and humanity’s God.”

You have no obligation to defend or explain the behavior of random street protesters. We have a lawless government that is flagrantly violating its legal, moral, even philosophical obligations to us. Everything else is secondary

this sort of gives the game away. the whole point of the LA deployment is relitigating the dispute (both political and cultural) that the right feels it lost in 2020

it is sort of funny that trumpism is the exact system they were trying to avoid and yet none of their institutional fixes to prevent this worked time to think about this

"With reasonable men, I will reason; with humane men I will plead; but to tyrants I will give no quarter, nor waste arguments where they will certainly be lost." William Lloyd Garrison

the reason the ruling class has such disdain for public art is because they think the space could be better used for ads

Avoid the violence/nonviolence debate. It’s a trap. The only thing that matters is what actions lead to more justice and less harm. Inaction and complicity in the face of brutal oppression is the worst form of violence. Never forget it.

what i like about this post is it is an illustration of one of the most distinctive qualities of williams' work and mainstream punditry in general, which is a belief that history began a decade ago

“This could poll well with midterm swing voters in Ohio” I remark sagely as I watch a fourth grader get bundled into an unmarked van at recess by armed and masked agents of the state.

Sad to see people aren’t honouring the real heroes of the past few days: middle aged white men posting online about how protesters are doing it wrong

It's hard to overstate how destructive the reflexive "this is a distraction!" stuff that politicians and commentators and people are always peddling. Everything is happening all at once. That's how authoritarianism works. If you can't navigate and synthesize this, you're not meeting the moment.

I’m not sure why Gavin Newsome doesn’t activate the rest of his army guard to prevent the president from it or force him to overrule it…. Then fight on the second amendment guaranteeing a state a right to a militia. How can a state have a militia if the president can simply federalize it

i admire that the "intellectuals" behind trump like vance or yarvin genuinely believe they are going to change american "culture" at literal gunpoint

The real enemy of this administration is cosmopolitanism. Whether in Los Angeles or South Africa, multiracial pluralistic democracy is a threat to them because it means their “us or them” model of the world is wrong. So they stir up trouble on purpose and gleefully lie.

The more I look at the prep and legal reasoning behind invading LA, the more it looks like that the administration wants to seize supreme authoritarian power over the corpse of the republic through force of arms but also doesn’t want to do any actual work to do so. Rather surreal.

The state Kristi Noem is from gets 40x as much representation in the United States Senate as the state Los Angeles is in. They take billions of dollars of tax money from our state every year. And yet it's not enough. They won't stop until they occupy our territory and destroy our freedom.
